My point is that it's only bad for kids to be exposed to swearing because we've decided that it's bad for kids to be exposed to swearing. As opposed to having decided that it's bad for kids to hit someone because hitting will cause pain and damage to the person being hit.

I've also seen a few times that people who curse are more honest, on average, than people that do not because they're more open and less likely to hold something back. For example, point 5 in this article:

HIDPlanet used to censor some words. It just so happened that Matsushita was a very popular brand for ballasts, so you'd always get newbies saying "WTF is a Matsu****a ballast? I can't find one anywhere!"

I don't know why they don't just set the filter to block the words only when there is a blank space in front of them, so it doesn't cut up words.

No one has told me yet what the second word that gets blocked here is. I'm tempted to list every curse word I know and see which one gets it. I'd hate to do that though, in a thread I started and mentioned how mature and civilized everyone is around here.

Then again... I would have never guessed D!©K would be on the naughty list, so I might not be able to guess the other word. Then I'd just be some obnoxious kid that comes on the forum starting questionable threads and just being blatantly offensive in them.

It all makes sense now! If you're conditioned in a world where it makes sense to not question something as wacky as one word being offensive (ass), but not offensive when it's spelled another way (butt), then you're less likely to question other wacky things the "man" does.

5th 86, you need to try going to sleep during mystery of the universe questionings more often. And I don't want to hear any, "but it's noon," complaining or anything like that. You're just going to have to take one for the team.

I always thought it was funny seeing someone write a post and then censoring themselves on a word I know isn't blocked, as if they were expecting the forum to do it. I mean, why take the extra time to write the fucking asterisks when it's done for you, right?
