Profanity!

I’m almost afraid to bring this up, because I haven’t seen anyone talk about it. So maybe it’s just been intentionally overlooked since no one’s brought it up or complained about it, but…

Is there actually no rule here against curse words?

I didn’t even notice for a long time, but one day I eventually noticed a “shit” in a really old post in a heavily viewed thread. I tried finding a rule against it, but I found nothing. So… all evidence points to there being no rule against it. I’d leave it alone, but I’ve been on several car forums throughout the years, and this is a first for me. It kind of blows my mind, really.

If this is indeed the case, then PRAISE TO YOU, FT86CLUB!!!

It’s not that I’m some crazy curse word addict, but I think many forums get really wacky with some of their rules:

Shit? - ILLEGAL!!!
$#!T? - Totally fine.

Haha what?! We all know what the person means and essentially said, and we all suffered 0 injuries because of it. So why not just allow the real deal and not make self-limiting rules that just cause inconvenience and weird looking substitutes? I’m so used to forums having a rule against curse words that I hardly notice anymore, but when I think about it, it really is some strange behavior. And not just forums’ rules, but “curse words” in general. Why is it that when a kid in school says “butt,” no one even notices. But if the same kid says “ass,” in the same, most well-meaning context, the authorities have to stop what they’re doing and go out of their way to reprimand the kid for some made up offense? Yet adults can do it, and no one gets upset. Unless it’s on TV. Depending on the channel. And then depending on the word, because apparently… some words are more curse-ish than others. What!? What kind of irrational, dark ages, superstitious, nonsense is this!?

Am I just some radical libertarian extremist, or is it that this really is some crazy counterproductive cultural behavior that does not make a bit of sense? Harassment and belittling should be moderated, but curse words, cuss words, and profanity are not only used to offend people. And the only people offended by them (curse words on their own, regardless of context) are people who have made a conscious decision ahead of time to always be offended by them because… well, just because. To me, this is no less crazy than someone choosing to be offended by blue jeans, then completely losing their mind every time they go out in public instead of considering maybe making a small change to themselves.

Infinite apologies to everyone if I just brought it to the moderators’ attention that there has been a rule missing this whole time. Party foul, I’ll chug. But kudos to this forum and everyone on it for actually being helpful and debatable while still maintaining a very acceptable level of respect, despite wielding the awesome power of arranging alphanumeric characters in any order you like!

You da best, mane! You de’id it!

Indeed.

My only gripe is that it happens even if it's part of a word. Like, The Chronicles of Rid****.

What!? I thought you were just typing astericks. I was all "LOL" and stuff when I read your first comment. You really can't save time when dealing with Richards.

Shortly after joining this forum I brought that up with one of the moderators. I was told that we are an adult community and it was o.k. I guess the thinking is that no younger person in a members family might go on mommy's or daddy's forum and snoop. I don't agree that it should be allowed but it is what it is. The good side of it is that it gives you a little easier insight to the character of the person posting.

Well I'm happy to know they won't be making a new rule on my account. I didn't think that would likely happen, but I was still worried a little. No one wants to be that guy.
