Question about A/T using it in Manual mode
Maybe this is more so for guys who drive the A/T version of the BRZ or maybe someone in general would know.
This is the first car I've driven that's A/T with the option to manual and shift and its how I prefer to drive. I never fully learned how to drive standard but I may learn eventually and do so with my next car. That being said, my question is, when shifting in Manual mode, will shifting while giving the car gas wear out or hurt the car or are you supposed to let off on the gas as you shift? Also I know sport mode makes the car rev higher but does sport mode do anything for the car when driving in manual mode or no? I drive using the stick to shift btw, I'm not really a fan of the pedal shifters, I drive with 1 hand on the wheel. Any info I appreciate and please, if your just gonna comment that I'm an idiot because I have an A/T for a sports car don't bother, it was the choice I made and I'm happy with it. |

Theoretically it's actually better for the transmission to keep on the gas when you shift, at least at higher RPMs. It keeps the line pressure up in the transmission so the clutchpack engagement is faster and doesn't generate as much heat.

Sports mode under D mode = Holds gears longer during acceleration, less shifting up. Shift faster. During hard brakes like a corner will result in a downshift same time it holds the gear to let you power out a turn. Manual mode allows you to shift when you choose to shift unless you come to a stop and the engine will prevent it from stalling and change gears by itself.
I put mine in manual and sports mode along with the aids on (used to keep it off but I had a full sideway glide which was fun but dangerous hahaha ahem) I'm not to osure about manual and sports mode I haven't tried manual driving during canyon I'll do it next time and come back with a review. The rev match is awesome downshifting. I hope I helped you out. Peace -Anthony |

Oh ok I wasn't sure because I was always keeping on the gas when shifting but sometimes I could smell a burn smell wasn't sure if maybe I should be doing that. Last few days I was trying shifting while briefly letting off the gas but it doesn't feel smooth. I'll go back to shifting while keeping on the gas.

So you keep yours in manual and sports mode? Does the sport do anything with manual mode on or does it just benefit in "D"? |

I'd like to add that I was surprised to learn that hitting a paddle accidentally while turning the wheel or signaling (not sure how I did it) and in DRIVE will still shift. I downshifted in D when I hit the "-" paddle during a tight turn, at least that's what I think happened. I thought that the paddles wouldn't work unless in MANUAL mode, but apparently mine do.
Scared the crap out of me, and I pulled over to figure out why the engine was racing. Sorry to digress. Back on topic. |

The Sport does nothing in manual mode since you control when you shift. It just does not turn off the light such as when you hit cruise control in sport.
As for downshifting, you do not really NEED to downshift because the transmission will down shift before it stalls. However I always downshift (just feels better) and you will not hurt the car if you downshift yourself at a reasonable RPM range which you can feel and hear when that is necessary. I will admit I have forgotten I was driving in Manual mode and took off from a few lights without shifting. I also prefer to use the stick and not the paddles the majority of the time. |

Yeah I tried the paddle shifters they are cool but I'm a 1 hand on the wheel mind of guy and turning while trying to use the damn pedal shifters I can't get used too it so I stay with the stick. Btw I know 0-60 on the standard out bets the A/T, can't remember by how much. But how much more of a difference would it be between standard and a A/T in Manual mode? |

manual mode, isn't true manual control, the "computer" is going to take control if you start to reach a dangerous limit. Sport mode does actually have an effect on the manual mode, its allows you to hold the revs longer than if you just had it in regular mode and manual. PS, you can also leave it in auto mode and take over gear changes with the paddles. it won't be the same dynamic as in manual or sport manual, but it is handy to control shifts. I think i do this literally every day i drive it.
