I think the more likely issue is that Toyota didn't do their due diligence with testing and never imported any American gasoline blends to test the car with.

Toyota and Subaru rigorously test all their cars in America like just about every other manufacturer who sells a high volume here, primarily testing high heat scenarios in the Southern California desert (doesn't get much hotter than Death Valley).

Why would they spend thousands of dollars importing fuel blends from around the world when they can just ship a couple test cars to certain locations? I also remember some statements that the suspension was actually tuned by region, so our FR-S probably has a different setup than the GT-86, not a huge difference but there's different parts in there.

Five bucks says the engineers shrug it off, it's only a noise after all, the PR team probably forced a fix to retain "legendary reliability".

You may be right, or they didn't test the cars for more than 2-300 miles. Some people weren't getting the chirp until they got closer to 1000 miles.

You realize the miles driven has more to do with fill ups cycling fuel through the pump than actual miles traveled right? Some appear on the first tank of different gas, some on the second, third, or twentieth.

It might have more to do with using a consistent blend than anything else for all we know, for instance the one time I tried Shell V-Power every third post talks about was my loudest tank, switched back to the cheapest station around (Arco) and it got quieter.

Anyway, they typically run cars in high heat actual scenarios to test for failures, that means at least 10,000 miles and on cars designed for reliability likely 100,000 miles (time permitting), I would bet another five bucks that there's a Toyobaru test mule in America right now with well over 60,000 miles on it.

Well, I brought in my car today to get a new High Pressure Fuel Pump installed and so far no crickets. However, only time and mileage will show whether or not my crickets are gone for good. From what I've read "here" it just doesn't seem like the problem will go away until a truly re-designed fuel pump is finally made available to us.

Let's see what happens.....

You're all wasting your time getting new HPFP's.

Want to give an update....use at your own risk but I have been doing the 2 cycle oil additive to the fuel, just as I did with my I30, and have not had the crickets. Also, my BRZ engine is much quieter, especially at idle.

http://forums.maxima.org/fluids-lubr...ml#post8784502

anyone else doing this??

So 83% of our sample space have had issues and Toyota/Subaru have just p**sied out and called it normal, really? that's not right, I hope there will be aftermarket HPFP when I get an FRS because no one wants a modern sports car to sound like a 60s-80s muscle car belt squeak tisk tisk toyobaru

I wouldn't say that you are wrong. However, we who try may get lucky and get a pump that "is" actually re-designed and solves the problem. Even if the part number is the same there would be revisions to said part number.

Reality of the situation is if everyone keeps having their HPFP replaced under warranty, ToyBaru's accountants and executives will spend money to develop a redesign. Right now they're banking on most people being ok with the loud chirping.

So after about 3.5k miles of silence, the chirps have come back!

I really think it's the gas. When I was exclusively using Shell 91, the chirps went quiet. I got a little too confident since it was quiet for so long. Recently I've been using all sorts of different gas, the BAM!!! The chirps came back today. My last fill up came from Chevron. Haven't used Shell for the past 2 fill ups.

Be brave and try the oil...at your own risk of course...and see how it works!

Good to see it mentioned again.

Here's a post on this same thread from almost a year ago suggesting the same solution but it got a lot of flack and ridicule. Some tried it and were pleased when the noise shut up.

I'm amazed that 83% have the crickets in the US when it seems unheard of in Oz where ethanol is rare and then it's only used in the lower grade that we can't use. Mine has 10,000km on the clock and idles quietly as do all the other here apparently because i've never seen any mention of it on the forums here.

What are the octane options in Australia?

What about Japan? I bet this was talked about already, but has anyone there had the crickets (sounds like an STD)?
