In Canada our DRL's come on as soon as we either start our vehicles or put the transmission in drive. It has been this way since the early to mid 90's. I guess that is why I feel fog lights are overkill.

I'd need to see some data on how driving with "as many lights on as possible" during clear weather conditions is safer than driving with just the headlights on before I started reaching for the fog light toggle on my JCW. (I have rear fogs too!) I personally think it is quite rude to oncoming traffic to drive with "extra" lights on that are serving no real purpose other than to create "more illumination" when none is actually needed. I mean, we have laws regarding the intensity of the bulbs; it stands to reason that fog lights are called fog lights and not "accent lights" because they are supposed to be used when it is foggy.

Truth be told-- fog lights work best in foggy conditions when the headlights are turned off completely. (Sadly, most cars are not wired that way.)

I also reserve the right to call anyone a douche bag that I feel is deserving of the title.

You should also feel free to drive with your fog lights on whenever the hell you want if you aren't breaking the law.

Picking your nose while you are driving = yucky
Using your fog lights when it is not foggy = douchey

In thread related news: I'm still waiting for my 10 Series but am doing contract work for the next 2 weeks out of the province and won't be able to pick it up if it comes in. *le sigh*

ps. I like your CF brake duct idea. Those are gorgeous...

Yep, that's why I'm getting PIAA Ion Yellow replacements. It'll remind me of my IS300 but will be much more effective in our frequent fog and rainy low viz conditions in a small silhouette car. See and be seen, and another reason why I'd like the DRL's to operate with the HID's.

Fog lights are supposed to be yellow too. Yellow light penetrates fog better than white light. Lexus had it right in the early 2000s. Love the yellow fogs on my IS300. If I were to put fogs on the 10 Series I'd definitely run h11 piaa yellows
I do run white fogs on another vehicle and it does light up the road a tad more around the side surfaces (lights up potholes/curbs a bit more), and that is with LED headlights, LED DRLs, and Halogen Fogs.
Trading my Auto LSD IS300 for Auto 10 Series. I wasn't able to push it on the FRS testdrive, has anyone driven a IS300 and FR-S enough to give a good comparison? I suspect it will be the same performance, LSD RWD, but better chassis and weight

So yeah, the next time you see someone w/ their fog lights on and call them a douche, it could be they turned them on because they think everyone else is a douche.

Not to derail the thread, but the whole yellow fog light thing is a bit of a myth. Actual measurements show that yellow bulbs and lenses actually transmit less light over a shorter distance and do no better (actually worse) than a normal bulb at penetrating fog. There were actually a few articles about how the yellow fog light was actually something of an accident that became a trend that caught on.

The only actual benefit I could imagine is yellow having less of an impact on your eyeball's rods at night thus better preserving your night-vision in a thick fog in the dark. Or added contrast for oncoming traffic who shouldn't be in your lane anyway. Of course you'll need to drive slower due to weaker light transmission and penetration. So maybe that's how yellow bulbs work, they make you slow down. Though they can look 'cool'.

This is what goes through my head when I see people driving with their fogs on in the middle of the day or in the city at night when it's not foggy:

"Your fog lights are on. It's not foggy. You're a douche bag."

Let's face it-- for a lot of people it seems like it is a contest to see who can have the most lights turned on at the same time on their vehicle.
Some cars, at least in Canada, have their DRL on the fogs, like the Neon/SX2.0, when they had the fog lights, they had them on ev
ery time the DRL were on, so I won't call it Douche...

I had a 5M/T LSD Sport Design that I drove to an SCCA Solo II regional championship in D Stock defeating the reigning regional champ and national champ along the way as a rookie.

My total seat time in an FR-S is 30 minutes in a 6A/T on one of my favorite curvy roads that had the salesman bracing and flinching, heh. I think the FR-S is better in every way than an IS300 except corner exit where you can't argue with displacement. Otherwise, I think the FR-S combines the best features of IS300 and MR2 Spyder that I also drove to a regional championship.

I'll be modifying my FR-S to once again compete in Stock class with limited changes allowed. It's a shame I didn't take delivery in early June as originally scheduled. Looking at the field in my region, I believe there was a chance to take enough remaining points even at the season's half way to earn a regional but have now missed too many events to consider that.

Instead, I'll enjoy BMWCCA, Porsche and Lotus club track days and auto-x for time only test and tune ideas for next year, and maybe get the attention of come Cayman pilots.

Right. It's the "be seen" part that concerns me. These are very small cars, so whatever makes them more visible in fog, heavy rain and spray is a plus. In my region, statistically half of all vehicles are pickups and many of them are modified with lifts, oversized tires and no mud flaps that generate so much spray that they obscure following AND leading traffic in opposing lanes as they pass. I'll take any benefit to be more visible to oncoming traffic in those conditions.

Seems you and I share the same disco ball logic so I can't argue w/ that. Hey, if someone sees me and calls me a douche, that means they see me. Mission accomplished.

I only mention the yellow fogs so people don't operate under false assumptions. You know, like having AWD means you can drive 120mph on the road during a thunderstorm w/o fear of any problems.

Yeah, I'll be using the Ions judiciously. The only time I've seen others with them were on a slammed Civic in a CAVU midday on city streets. Pathetic, over the top for me and am not really looking for improved outward viz, but should meet the "be seen" disco ball douché tag perfectly on a 0/0 viz day.
