First Ever Track Day

Had a blast and I'm hooked. Went in as a sponge and learned a whole ton today. The instructor and I agreed that the mods I've done to the car make it beastly. I drove with full aids on since it was my first time, but I never got them to to kick in. The supercharger just makes the car pull. I didn't get brake fade, thank goodness. I just have ATE blue and SS lines in there.

Lola did give me confidence to push and push even though I was a complete beginner. I also think I felt comfortable trying for faster mainly due to the structure and safety measures put in by the organizers. I would highly recommend anyone come down and do it. I still have another day to go tomorrow!!!

This is my car in the morning after I finished prepping her. We had a total of four 86's out today.

Well The point of this post is to give you guys some data points on how the cooling system performed. Before we get to the goods I want to give y'all a teaser on how I mounted the Setrab core. As you can see I mounted mine in front but off centered. The core is sitting on polyurethane standoffs. This may not be the best placement by my thought process
1) The setrab core is getting fresh air
2) Although it is radiating heat into the intercooler, at least it is radiating heat into the intake side of the intercooler. There is still opportunity for the air to be cooled as it passes through to the other side
3) The exit part of the intercooler is unobstructed so that, the AC condensor and radiator still have open area to get air.

Now that's out of the way. Let's get to the data! Thread is no good without data right?

Torque was being a bastard so I only got a log for my third out of four sessions. Each session was 20 minutes. This was at 2:00pm and it was a blazing 103F outside. I think the in car meter read 108F. Pretty hot. The following a graph that shows my speed, engine RPM, coolant and oil temperature.

I just changed to back Amsoil 0W-20 oil from 5W-30. You can see my oil temp maxed out around 240F. Coolant got a little hot for comfort but it did it's job. One thing I like to point out was during the cool down lap the temps fell pretty quick. It is a fairly technical track so there wasn't a lot of time to keep the RPMs up.

20130629-TDE-MSR-Green-Session3-Temps by VictorN07, on Flickr

Overall I think this was a worthwhile modification. I think without the oil cooler I may have seen 280F on 5W-30 tracking it. I'll try to get some more logs tomorrow.

This time I included Intake Air temperatures for those interested to see how putting the core in front of the intercooler affects performance. I do not have a reference point on if Intake Air Temperature got better or worse.

If you look at my 3rd session from Day 1, you'll see that I've gotten faster on Day 2.

It was less hot than yesterday but still hot in Houston. I had a blast driving more. Brake pads are probably glazed, brake fluid boiled, tires shredded. It was awesome! I'm addicted now.

Track Day Videos

Used my dashcam to record the sessions. These are all from Day 2 of The Driver's Edge event. We were at Houston MSR going counter-clockwise. At this point I had built up more confidence in my ability and my faith in the car.

Please keep in mind this was not a competitive event and I'm a complete beginner to tracks/autox. I have lots to learn!

I'd turn down the volume when watching. It was a requirement to have our windows down while driving so we can give signals. Turn on close captions for speed information. Enjoy!

@Brian@Vortech , these are the type of videos that customers want to see. Not slammed hardparked show cars cruising and climbing over curbs to dubstep soundtracks.

@F1point4 , awesome stuff man. Looked like a blast. Congrats on getting your first (of many) HPDE completed successfully! Track time is very addicting!

Are you happy with the oil temperature data or do you think you should have used a larger oil cooler?

Also, how much did the oil cooler reduce your oil pressure?

For me I'm happy. Without the oil cooler I was regularly seeing 240F just cruising 95 mph on the expressway in all conditions on 5W-30 (about 4k rpm in 6th). So to see 240F on 0W-20 in just about the most extreme condition I could subject the car to (tracking in 105F heat), I would be happy with that.

Some have told me my temps are still too high. Still have to factor in that we are reading the temperature through a custom PID in torque and the fact the sensor calibration is unknown, I personally just have to have faith that my engine will be okay. I believe I saw the max temperature for the Amsoil Signature oil I use is 300F. Hopefully I'm no where close to that.

I have no idea about oil pressure so I cannot quantify. I kept the lines as short as possible to minimize this logical reduction.

Daily Driving Temp Log

Noticed low temps on my way to work. Here is a graph of just my commute home today. Oil temp seems to climb pretty slow. Takes 12-15 minutes to stabilize.

I wish I took logs when I was NA and Boosted+Pre Oil Cooled

Thanks for the great info. I have a few more questions, but don't hesitate to tell me to search.

With the custom PID (OBDII parameter ID per wiki), I assume you're supplying 'torque' with a conversion from 0-5V signal to deg F? And the validity of that conversion depends on the calibration of your temperature sensor? Hopefully my brain isn't stuck in OBDI world...

Most random interweb pages I can find suggest a slightly lower max oil temperature... ~210-220 deg F... m*c*dT is essentially all we would need to determine the 'ideal' oil cooler, right? mass flow rate of oil through the cooler, specific heat of the oil, and desired temperature reduction (say 20 deg F from your 13 row cooler). That would tell us the necessary additional heat transfer rate.

The oil cooler you used (thanks for the P/N pic) 50-613-7612, per Setrab (here: http://www.setrabusa.com/oilcoolers_engine.html ) is rated for 170-200 hp, with a pressure drop of 4 to 4.5 psi @ 19 to 26,000 btu/hr.

@andreyiv was able to find the PID for oil temperature. Apparently Toyota/Subaru decided to tuck this away in a non-standard PID. I agree about the calibration of the temp sensor playing a factor to the reading. I would wager we agree knowing the delta is more important.
See post 2: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23530

Yea Thermodynamics and Fluids are not my forte. I'd probably need to read a ton more before making informed comments.

I will say that I picked this cooler size mainly because it fit where I wanted to put it. I will say with confidence, I cannot fit a larger cooler under the crashbeam with the Vortech intercooler in the way.

You can see the 'oil thermostat' that prevents oil from entering the oil cooler until it reaches a certain temperature. I believe at that point, it behaves like the thermostat in your cooling system. A 'wax' inside the valve melts, expands and compresses the spring as the valve opens. Can you get a different thermostat? Can you use a stiffer spring?

I'm not sure if the thermostat is glued in place. Judging from the hex end, I would not be surprised if you could replace the thermostat with another one. Just guesses at this point.

It's unfortunate that Mocal makes the only thermostatic sandwich plate in town.
