Remember that the chassis info has been revised. It's no longer Legacy/Impreza based (likely a rumour that came from the test mule). It's all new and hopefully single purpose, like the Miata. If that is the case it won't have any extra unnecessary weight from platform sharing like the Z. If they attack weight as seriously as Nissan did with the Z, in the name of efficiency and performance, sub-2500 lbs is actually very reasonable.
If Toyota's thinking ahead, they should be introducing weight-saving measures and production methods (left over LFA carbon-fiber facilities?) across their line to keep ahead of the competition in the economy war. If they do, economies of scale come into play. And that could mean an inexpensive, very light FT86/FR-S.

The only reasons I ever saw this as a possible contender was:
1. If they offer a higher trim level that makes similar power:weight. 2. I was under the impression the price had jumped to the mid to high 20's to start, but I guess that was just a rumor? Beyond that, the sports car/pony car market is defined by more powerful cars, with the exception of the Miata, which seems to have created its own niche market, and the closest competitor, the MR2, was canned several years ago. That said, if the price and power:weight remain night and day, there is no debate to be had, and this car will end up competing (and winning, I expect) against cars like the GTI and whatever new Civic shitbox Honda trots out. I still don't see this stealing away any Miata guys, but who knows until the thing is out dodging cones. |

Some 370Z owners would use the FR-S as a DD, just like other people with sports cars already. If this thing looks sweet with great mpg, then it will be more popular in the long run.

The question of price is important to me. In Sweden we pay 25% tax when we buy a car. The 370 is way out of reach, in fact even the Genesis Coupé is over priced here IMO.

370z > FR-S.
That does not mean the FR-S won't be a great car, the 370Z is a raw sports car, it delivers power throughout most of its powerband, its got a V6. The FR-S just might get the golden ticket too, hopefully it handles well and perhaps V6 conversions will soon begin...

My 370z review: I test drove the Canadian Touring model and I was totally disappointed. The new transmission is a lot better than the M6 in the 350z but that's not saying much, the 350z had a horrible transmission. The steering feel was not direct enough and floated at speed. The car felt very heavy in corners and didn't translate any sense of fun to the driver. For all of it's horse power and wonderful exhaust note the car didn't "feel fast". I'm doing over 140kph and I felt like I was crawling.
370 = fail. |

We are THE news source for this car. Everyone on the internet is linking to us.
Everytime we break new info on these cars we're getting a lot of new members joining up. AT LEAST THESE NEW BATCH OF NOOBS ARE USING THE SEARCH FUNCTION!!!! on topic: the 2012 370Z has an oil cooler standard so that's one issue down. Now they need to do something about weight. |
