Coming from a CRX, I'm as blind as a bat in this thing. It's not the lane immediately next to me that's a problem, it's the lane two over. I'm always straining to see if anyone is trying to merge into the same lane as I am. Oh, and I never feel fully comfortable backing up either... I was spoiled by being surrounded by glass on all sides.

Try turning your head and looking through that little triangle back window. I've only had the car for 2 days but that's what ive been doing when moving into the left lane.
