@vtmike here's the results. All done in 1 hour, same map (Litchfield tune), same roads and each individual pull done at the same part of road. 2x 3rd gear and 1x 4th gear full throttle pulls. Closed is with the main resonator hole blocked, resonated is with the main resonator in use, open is with the hole open into the engine bay. The stock snorkel is in use.

MAF:

AFR:

MAP:

What this does show quite clearly is that, even with the same airbox and MAF location, changing something as small as the resonator impacts on the airflow readings. This can be seen in certain areas and the resultant AFR changes. It's clear that no more air is being used, yet some areas are leaning out and that correlates with lower MAF readings. TBH, I included the MAP graphs but I'm not 100% sure how to interpret them.

I'm yet to determine whether the ECU could learn and adapt to these changes which are really visible in the range I mentioned previously. Obviously a remap for each config would mean that the hesitation I was experiencing would go away (like @NickFRS), but I'm not sure that any particular config is "best" for performance. I also don't seem to lose any noticeable sound through using the resonator.

I've been temped to design a 2nd feed (or snorkel if you will) that uses the resonator port and snakes across the bay to a cold air pocket but again, I fear that this may not gain much, if anything.

After my tune it sounds like I have a CAI under the hood. I'll have someone take video tomorrow. And yea my car was running rich before the tune. But now everything looks good after the custom BRZedit protune. wrapped my header a bit ago and installing it tonight. I'm getting retuned on wed now. I'll get some data.

Looks to me like the dip in, which would be initial hesitation is affected but that after that the differences are just noise.

Would make sense that the resonator would act as an air resivour and affect off throttle response. But not overall power.

@Kodename47

I removed mine for visual and under hood clutter... Same thing with the inlet tube , getting rid of the sound generator gayness was a priority.

Looks like resonated is the best option.

Probably, yes. Looking at the MAF graphs, it's interesting to see where "noise" is generated depending on what config. The resonator seems to be a fine middle ground. Having it open to the bay is very noisy sub 2.5k but then seems to be the smoothest line, having a closed box seems to be similar, except the noise is 2.5-3k. Both cause the MAF to read lower though so may need MAF adjustment on the ECU. I may go ahead with my plans and see what happens.

I recently ordered the trd intake. I'm hoping it provides more accurate maf readings and seems to make power and torque throughout the entire powerband while increasing throttle response. Not to mention it removes the resonators.

airwaves are probably colliding

the resonators likely help with the airflow

IMO, its best to remove the sound generator with Perrin silicone tube and a drop in; this should improve the noise and throttle response (slightly)

there is a lot of engineering that goes into design.

Hallo, sorry to re-up the thread, but during these years there had been many tests.
It seems that snorkel mod gives some gain, but main resonator?
Did someone tested the Apex'i Intake D Plus? Many Japanese people use it. I even found that airbox intake is quite restricted...

Proven by Mishomoto with these fine words:

https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61621

"Utilizing the Mishimoto induction hose and a high-flow panel air filter, and with the noise amplifier removed, we were able to gain 6 horsepower and 3 torque over the all-stock setup. We also saw a loss in power with the resonator removed, so the resonator should be retained if you are using the factory airbox setup."

Trust the engineers, they know stuff. And just to beat a dead horse, its your car - do what you want.

Additionally, after reading 27 pages of comments on if removing the resonator box is beneficial or not, it is my final conclusion that you lose some power in the lower rpms, and is not a great mod if you drive in that range.

However, if you dont mind a bit of power loss (ha) but want a cleaner engine bay, cap it off. I'd only do so to show my sweet red Perrin light weight crank pulley. Who needs a giant black box blocking that view!? Now if I only didnt also read 13 forum posts and 100 comments on light weight pulleys and their benefits, or lack thereof... glad I didnt buy into the hype.
