Edit: And in the case of AWD with a 4-cylinder, the extra weight of the AWD front diff and axles would offset some of that weight loss.

Still terrible for AWD. More acceptable by 0.5-1.5” than previously estimated if adapted to the BRZ’s tranny, that’s assuming there is no adapter plate that adds thickness between the tranny and engine of course.
And are you talking about the block length or engine length? Any links to dimensions? How about the height difference?

So are you suggesting someone transplant a transverse k24 into the BRZ because if not then I don’t understand how those components would work longitudinally?
Just saying: AWD isn’t exactly better, except in certain conditions, so the idea seems to be without merit. I would think the Civic Type R would have proved that.

Then the issue is you now have all the weight from engine and transmission up front, with a primarily FWD twin. I think I would rather an EVO drivetrain swap if I am going that route. (maybe k24 to evo trans adapter?)
My suggestion for someone wanting awd swap (which I REALLY want to do, and will eventually), is either an r34 sequential with custom bellhousing (kind of like Rob Dahms awd rx7), the t56 with transfer case that is available (less than ideal as the driveshaft is on driver side and will have issues with steering shaft), or GR6 transaxle from a R35 mounted in the back. (My favorite as it moves a lot of the weight to the rear and is a DCT). All of which will require a ton of money/fabrication to make work. The swap will also cut into the cabin for the extra driveshaft and transfer case. You also have to take into consideration front subframe in relation to the driveshafts and front diff, front diff and axles in relation to an engine that can't move up any, and a driveshaft that that realistically needs to be on the passenger side, and trying to fit an exhaust at the same (unless hood dump is your fancy)

Yes. Which makes it not worth it for about 99.8% of people.

I'll bet it's fewer than that. Honestly fitting the LS in here was pretty hard. It's not possible to get AWD components in here without SIGNIFICANT modifications to the belly of the car. You're well beyond an engine swap and deep into one off gimmick project territory. But of course you understand this and want to do it anyways
