Update: I have obtained a copy of an email from a Subaru district manager confirming they they are working against the spirit of the agreement Subaru entered into with the NHTSA. How could these items be a "substantial safety concern" if they previously offered a quote for uninstalling and reinstalling them??

Keep digging that hole Subaru, this email will get tacked on to my already open NHTSA investigation.

If your dealer is refusing to perform the recall without you paying to have mods removed, I implore you to open an NHTSA investigation at the following link:

This is explicitly against the agreement that Subaru entered into with the NHTSA and puts them out of compliance. Dealerships are going to keep doing this until they're held accountable to the law. File these reports and let the dealership know you are doing it. They are subject to a fine of up to $21,780 for each vehicle they refuse.

Good point about the BMW engine in the Supra. I could be mistaken but I thought I read that BMW will be servicing the drivetrain on the Supra. This could also impact people’s opinion on a gen 2 86/BRZ.

The supra is not using a boxer engine. The boxer engine really is a different animal.

Because Subaru didn't sell those cars, Toyota did. You buy the warranty when you buy the car. It is honored by the brand that sold the car.

But it isn't, it is much more complicated than that.Thinking of it as two seperate 2 cylinder engines is more appropriate, but it isn't that either. To put it simply there is a reason only Subaru and Porsche use them.

The only thing I find fundamentally different is wrist pin installation. Otherwise it's another four cylinder.

The only thing that complicates this engine really is the abundant use of FIPG. It’s actually really easy to work on other than that. You don’t even need beer. I suspect they aren’t popular because simple tasks like coil packs, valve adjustment, plugs etc aren’t practical without pulling the engine. The only real advantage they have is low CG so it’s only really logical to put them in a sports car and there just aren’t many sports cars. Manufacturers want an engine that is easy to maintenance that they can use in all their cars not just sports cars.
