Click/clanking sound w/ P219A, P119F, P0302

I'm just starting this thread to document what I'm going through after my engine was replaced under warranty by Subaru.

After getting my car back the engine was making this clicking sound from the driver side (I think). Bring it to dealer, they essentially say that it's a non-issue because of something in the direct injection being the cause of the sound. Not the "crickets" sound, but the clanking/clicking.

So I go drive for < 30 mins and the whole car is vibrating while idling and the CEL pops up. Autozone diagnosed it as a P0302 (misfire of cyl #2) so I take it back. Next morning dealer says that they aren't getting a P0302 but an air-fuel mixture ratio imbalance. Ok... so they put booster in it to help the octane levels. Mind you, this car has been in their hands for over 5 months (don't get me started) with the same gas sitting in it.

I suspect the stale gas is to blame, so I'm trying to burn through it in the meantime. When I got it back I filled the tank up to full with 93 octane, which was about 5 gallons. I just burned through that and filled up when the low gas light came on with 11.5 gallons of 93. Still have the clicking sound and I just got codes for P219A, P119F (both air-fuel ratio imbalance) and P0302 (misfire cyl#2). I might have to completely go through another tank before it fixes itself? IDK.

Oh, and the kicker to all this? I'm leaving for military training in a week so I'm kind of SOL if I can't find out what the problem is before then.

I'm open to suggestions but I'm just getting this down in case someone runs into a similar issue.

There are already quite a few threads about the P219A/P119F combo, I've got it on my 17 '86.

The short of it is, those a/f ratio imbalance codes are mini misfires, because the car detects them when the engine speed between cylinders varies beyond a certain (very sensitive) threshold. In the 17-19 cars, they are caused by valves being slightly too tight, it's a silent issue that usually results in intermittent MIL illumination.

You car sounds like a rocker arm or lifter or valve shim took a crap. This isn't some stale gas or too low of an octane rating, this is the sound of mechanical parts failing.

Yeah that's what I was afraid of... just trying to rule bad gas out. I'll be taking it to dealer tomorrow anyway to see what they say again.

sounds like when they replaced your engine, a rocker arm might have fallen off and is now lodged between something. Which means one of the valves isn't opening and closing and depending on where its potentially lodged at, it could have damaged the one next to it too. I've seen a tech do this with some of the same symptoms you're describing. Demand them remove the valve cover and do an inspection. It can be done with the engine in the car, so don't believe it they say they have to remove the engine again just to inspect.

how can the dealer say the sound is normal?

Is this a brand new engine? Rebuild? second hand motor?

Could it be a cracked valve spring that the recent recall is about?

My 2017 BRZ gave me a CEL a week ago and when I scanned it, I found P219A and P119A DTCs. I had the dealer look at it 3 days ago and was told there’s a TSB for it (11-184-18), but I haven’t found any info on it (no TSB list that I’ve seen includes it). Here’s the bit from my write up:
