Breaking in my 4.56
Absolutely no gear noise! Beginning to think I should have gone 4.88... Can't wait to push them once broken in tho see the real difference. Then I will know for sure- but I can already state there is no problem with 4.56 on a daily driver... |

![]() This is a nice improvement - the 4.56 gears are not radical by any means and are absolutely fine for a daily driver and freeway use. I like the ability to break loose off the line if desired (which I lost with my sticky tires), and there is definitely an improvement in acceleration. As stated previously there is no gear whine/noise with the OEM part. So, would I do it again? Perhaps... This is not a cheap upgrade - I have about $1K all in (I opted to buy a entire 3rd member from a crashed FRS with 24K miles for $250, the gears were about $500, seals and gear setup ran $300). The effects are noticeable but not drastic - I do wonder if I might have been happier with 4.88s - (I have a manual transmission - no question for an automatic). Of course gear noise and freeway driving might have been too much for me. I have a nagging doubt about not choosing 4.88; however I will never know... Final conclusion: nice upgrade, a bit costly (though could have been cheaper with non-oem gears and no spare third member), total stealth mod and no California smog issues or dealer concerns, perhaps too conservative but still fun. |

Not worth at all, you basically loose one gear as your first gear is no longer usable and your six is basically what 5th was before. Speaking as someone with the 4.88 and I find it to be the highest you could go before losing utility on first gear.

I remember reading somewhere on this forums through the many threads that the FD upgrade threw off the Gear Count on the MT. I believe it was reading the incorrect gear because the TCU was calculating off of the RPMS & gear ratio.... not sure, can't remember what the logic/.theory was and i cant find the thread i initially read it in.
Is this effect true to the AT? I have an AT Frs and am planning to do a 4.88 FD upgrade. I wondering if the gear count in manual mode that is displayed will be incorrect? I.E. Display reads 3rd gear when I'm actual in 4th...etc. Also if it would confuse the TCU in any way regarding the AT's downshifting or upshifting... I assume it wouldn't be affected but i'm no expert ![]() I would appreciate those with an AT and FD upgrade could chime in... Thanks! |
