The FRS is the better all around daily driver...less running costs, more comfortable interior, and better visibility out of. I can get a set of tires for the FRS for under $300...try that with a Camaro, ain't going to happen.
I had a '98 Camaro V6, which would be the best generation camaro as far as handling is concerned due to its more mid engine layout and much lighter weight than the pig they call a Camaro these days. After I put effort into it, dropping some 200+ lbs, installing a Hurst competition + shifter, and redoing the rear suspension with spherical bearing rear control arms and panhard bar, getting the Hotchkiss anti-rollbar setup and Koni Sport adjustable shocks all the way around, better brake pads, and getting some knockoff Z06 17x9.5 wheels with DOT-R Nitto 555RII track tires it was decent in handling...but still not as good as my '90 Acura Integra track car (~2300lbs with a full tank) which was just as fast in the 1/4 mile and quicker on my local roadcourse with its stock power level motor... Turn in and steady state in the Camaro was great along with excellent braking, but it just did not like changing direction in a quick, precise manner - it's weight was made evident event with a reduction in weight and insanely better than stock suspension setup. I will always go with a lightweight well balanced chassis over a 1000+lb heavier not so well balanced chassis with lots of power. Power means squat if the handling precision is lacking... I liked the car, but it was a pain to work on and just too dang heavy... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c_sMDIW-jM"]Autocrossing on a dry course..wmv - YouTube[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXwIlWWNKO4"]Clean lap....wmv - YouTube[/ame]

Both cool cars, if your going to drag the thing then get a camaro. But if you want something that's easy to toss around with confidence get the fr-s. I was on the same exact boat as you. I went with an frs at the time because I was surprised that Toyota came out with another rear wheel drive sports car, and at the time I had my eyes on a used cobra, MR2, and an ae86 Toyota corrola no joke. And I also had my eyes on the new camaros, mostly because I was raised with them. so I was basically sold when I found out about the fr-s being rwd and light weight. But that was when they first came out. The car was so fun I thought I found the machine built for me... Then came the day when I felt like I needed a little more power, so I experimented on a few intakes, headers, and a full exhaust and tuned the thing. And it felt better. But I'm not really into fast 1/4 mile type of cars like I use to be, I prefer nimble light weight cars with enough speed to get me through the day. But if your into that stuff and like drag racing every weekend then by all means go for the camaro v8. But if your like me then the fr-s

As I've said else here, my proud redneck upbringings means I love the Camaro (I'm from NC where the state tree is a telephone pole with a Camaro wrapped around it) I also love small sports cars.... At the end of the day, I ended up with the FR-S for the following reasons, in no particular order:
I can also tell you that if I was in the market today under the same situation, I would have not bought either. I would have purchased a bottom-end C7 Corvette. All that said, I do not regret my decision at all.

I work for GM and drive a BRZ. I like the Camaro but its just too damn heavy, running costs with fuel/tires/brakes/consumables are also much higher on the Camaro. I may consider the next gen if they end up dropping at least 300-500lbs off it.

first off $25k will not buy you a new v8 camaro so you would have to look at used, probably without a warranty. Second off, if you are interested at all in driving a manual you will want the frs. I test drove a mustang GT, Camaro SS, and FRS all with a manual in the same day and the FRS is hands down the best driver. the camaro clutch pedal felt like it was out of a dodge neon and had no feedback whatsoever and it was matched to a shifter that felt like it should be in a MAC truck so it was the worst clutch pedal/shifter combo i had ever driven. I am very confident i made the right choice with my FRS, the only other car i was considering was a 370Z nismo but that would have put me back in the $40k range and i didn't want to spend that much.

If you want a v8 muscle car, save up a bit and get a Mustang 5.0 GT. Around here, dealers were advertising base model GT's for around $26,xxx.

I still haven't decided.
And when I said new I meant the frs. All the camaros in my price range have around 25-30k miles on them. I think I'm leaning more towards the frs. I like to go rip ass around back roads with my buddies and the camaro can't really handle that. Plus, looking into it the aftermarket parts are way cheaper for this than the camaro. Ps. Sorry for the horrible spelling in the first post, I made it in the middle of class and was trying to act like I was paying attention. |
