A lot of people report no crickets for a few hundred miles on the new pump and then they return. You should let us know again within the next 500 miles if they stay away.

The sound does come from the fuel pump. All you have to go is go back to the dealer and they will replace the pump and some seals which is covered under warranty.

I work for Toyota and have access to the tech bulletins so I have been keeping my eye out for updates on this one. They just released an updated one a few weeks ago that found the root cause of the chirping. It has to do with bad seal alignment on the inside of the DI pump that causes the noise. To fix it you have to have the dealer replace the pump but it has to be after a certain manufacture date. I think the date was 4/2013 but I will have to check when I'm at work.

Thats great to hear! When I go in next week for my free oil change I plan on having them do it.

At 7500 miles, I had the fuel pump swapped out under warranty, and the crickets went away. Within the first 500 miles on the new one, the sound was back. I'm hoping they come up with a solution soon

Not to rain on the parade, but this information came out back in April, and people who have been getting the pumps replaced as early as last month are still getting the chirps after a little while.

Definitely. And it has been shown to pretty much a 100% success rate that getting your HPFP replaced will make the crickets go away... at least for 100 miles or so...

You can certainly try to go to arbitration for this, but good luck. I would not even waste my time.

I will definitely complain to both my dealer and Subaru America, but expecting to get Toyoya or Subaru to replace your car for something this minor is not being very realistic. Every car I have ever owned has had quirks. If the worst thing this car has is some intermittent crickets I will be happy.

A new car would be useless. All of the cars have this issue in the US (or the potential to have the issue). They all use the same HPFP.
That is Incorrect. I Lemon law'd my 2013 SS (more than 30 days in shop) and most of time it was in the shop it was due to random rattlings from the engine. Chevy started to give me a bot of headache and that's when I had my lawyer send them a letter. They then procceded to honor the lemon law within a week!

I had the crickets after filling up with 91 octane 10% ethanol in Iowa on my way back home to Omaha. Noticed the crickets when I stopped to use the bathroom and get some water. Ran the tank until it was close to E, no low gas light. Filled up with my usual 91 non Ethanol gas, crickets gone. Now I have not driven 4+ hours at 80-85MPH continuously since then so granted my crickets could not appear until I do that again, but I am sticking by this ethanol in gas issue until I see otherwise personally. I am no mechanic, no engineer, but it worked. Did not have them before I left on my road trip, did not have them when I got to my Dad's in Michigan on 91 non Ethanol gas, and only the last leg when I HAD to fill up with 10% it showed up.

I did half a tank of 92, no-ethanol gas and then the other half 92 10% ethanol. I got crickets.

I'm going to try and run her empty, and then try non-ethanol fuel.

I haven't had a chance to read through 100+ pages of form but this is just what I heard from Toyota: The chirping is normal and part of the noise the boxer engine gives off.

I would assess it is because of the design and high compression, if the said comment was true. It's a little annoying but that's what a loud stereo is for :P
