3m tape might not be the ideal way to attach them, looking at the provided pitures the 86's paddle's are narrow, without the large flat surface area like the R8 shown in the video. A hot day and multiple agressive shift and they very well could easily, come off.

Have to tried to diassemble the silver portion of the paddle shifters yet? It may if it can be removed (likely) taking the OEM shifters, modifying their shape and then wrapping them in carbon fiber might be the way to go. This would be a direct replacement but, should provide a more OEM install and quality.

as you can see, the speedheart's paddles are extensions that sandwich the factory units... it is held together with 4 hex screws and it also comes with padding sheets to make it fit snug with minimal play...

it is constructed out of duralumin and the manufacture states the following disclaimer:
"since the oem paddles are made of plastic and the extensions out of duralumin, product may result in scuff marks onto the oem paddles post installation/use."

i'm going to wrap my stockers with vinyl before i put them on to protect them and it will most likely make it fit just right...

I've seen pictures of the units disassembled and it looks to me like the drift pin that holds them together should be removable without taking apart the entire assembly (I could be wrong, of course). You need to be careful because there are spring loaded pieces held in place that will try to pop out, but the arms should be removable to make 3D scans, which could then be modified and 3D printed to make samples for moldmaking or CNC type use with the right material. This would keep the arm/paddle as a single piece for strength and seamless appearance.

There are a plethora of different adhesives to choose from with 3M. So far, I've tested 2 different ones, and neither of them have failed in this application. I'm testing a third adhesive that has an even higher temperature tolerance than the previous two. That said, the 2 that I have tested, while not easily removed as implied, do flex too much for what I want. That is why I am testing a 3rd adhesive.

Keep in mind that the way I designed my extensions means that the tape will be under compression in use. The shear stress resulting from a 37.5 gram shifter extension hanging on 3+ square inches of adhesive surface area is practically negligible compared to the shear strength of the adhesive even at the 200 degrees Fahrenheit in a car sitting in a parking lot in a 125 degree day. The new adhesive I am testing has a long term temperature tolerance of 300 degrees (250g static shear on 1 square inch of tape for 10,000 minutes). Bottom line is that it will not simply fall off. Again, when you pull on the shift lever, the tape is under compression not tension nor shear. Even then, the flex that I mentioned earlier is if you were to wiggle it around side to side for shits and giggles. Normal use does not have any flex whatsoever (the adhesive is after all only 0.002" thick).

As for dis-assembly of the factory shifter, it is not easy to do in the first place and the internals are not what you would expect.

Can we also remove the paddle shifter and replace the whole wheel with a "manual" steering wheel since the steering wheel on the automatic has the two holes for the paddle shifters?
