Steering twang.

Ok so.. I just started getting this problem and Im just wondering if anyone has had anything similar. I haven't seen this mentioned since i'ved joined the forums.

I'm getting this twang when turning my steering wheel from say 70% left to about 70% right. I might get 1 - 3 little twangs. And by twangs i mean i feel a shock that seems to vibrate up through the steering column and can be felt in the steering wheel. Its definitely audible inside and outside the car and it sounds like a really dull twang.

Only started happening when it started getting cold out.. . and sometimes it does it and some times it does not.

Mods to suspension are coilovers, lca's, and steering rack lockdowns (installed 6 months ago).

Thanks for the input in advance!

hmmm......a NEW sound coming from our cars ........

I haven't heard of a "twang" before....??

I would suspect that your car's electric power steering doesn't like some of your suspension/steering mods, when it gets cold.

Maybe the steering rack lock downs are binding the rack and the PS servo(s) don't like it doing that.

Just guessing ........ really I ....

It would be nice to get a video of the problem. I'm expecting it to sound like modern Kentucky Bluegrass but I'm having a hard time picturing it.

It's probably the rack lockdown blocks. Try taking one out.

@olsonpg likely your coilover springs binding against the perches if you don't have roller bearings.

You win all the marbles.

Did a quick search of "roller bearings frs", because I had no idea what those were. And this is the description this product has on replacing the roller bearings on our car:

This upgrade is for 2 sets of bearings that will go on the front struts.
Recently only available on race applications and mega dollar suspension systems. Fortune Auto now makes spring noise and spring; a thing of the past. Needle Thrust Roller Bearings are essential for noise-free operation on vehicles with front strut configurations. Vehicles with front struts tend to turn the front springs on coilover applications. This results in the spring dragging on the spring perches and making an annoying "boing" or "twang" sound. This sound is harmless but can get annoying at times. This noise is more prevelant in low speed occurances such as turning into a parking spot or when temperatures are below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. We have also noticed that heavier cars benefit greatly from this solution (Evolutions & WRX/STi platforms.)

Ty Ty.

Which route did you do? How much work is it to take a top hat off and stick a bearing in there?

Thanks in advance.
