Slow Revving / Acceleration after TSB 0040-13

I dropped off my FR-S yesterday for an oil change and for them to look at an issue I was having with interment RPM drops at idle. After reading here on the forums this appears to be a somewhat common issue and I saw the TSB associated to it. My car is all stock, built in April 2013, delivered to dealership in May 2013, leased by me in Feb. 2014 with 268 miles on it. The car is my daily driver and I only have 2,176 miles on it. Knowing the oil was over a year old I called and asked Toyota should I go ahead and have it change despite my miles being so low. They said yes and since I purchased the maintenance package it would be no charge. I drive my car pretty normal during my 5 mile drive to work with spirited runs getting on the highway and around town in light traffic going other places. At a stop light with the AC on or off it would sometimes stumble like it was going to die or just idle rough but never die on me. My service writer confirmed there was a TSB about it and they would take care of it.

After a few hours of dropping it off it was done. I picked up the car and almost immediately noticed the reaction time between movement of the gas pedal and the engine responding was lagging. On the way home it seemed like the engine took longer to rev up and make power to take off from a stop. I had to readjust my timing of the gas and clutch a bit to make up for it. On the bright side it did seem to idle smoother but this could have been due a combination of the oil change and the flash of the ECU for the TSB. This morning when I started it and let it warm up for a few seconds when I would give it gas and keep my foot still, it would slowly rev up, stay at 2000 rpm for a split second but then drop down to 1500 and the go back to 2000 and then back down to 1600 and then back up 2000 and finally hold steady. I don’t know if this behavior of the engine when cold has always been like this but I am pretty sure I am not imagining the fact that the car revs slower. Even on the drive in to work it just did not feel as spirited as it did. I am going to drive it some more and see if I just get used to it. I wish now I had not had the TSB done as I doubt there is any way to un-do the changes they made. Has anyone else had this TSB done and experienced the same thing?

It's normal. Happens any time you flash a new ROM or your ECU loses power. Just takes some time for the ECU to relearn. You can do the throttle pedal trick to speed up the process and go for a drive and keep it at partial throttle for a while, i.e. highway driving. The throttle pedal trick is to turn the car on, but don't start it. Depress the throttle all the way and release. Do this about 10-20 times. Turn key off. Start up as normal and drive.

x2 on learning after re-flash.

Its probably the biggest thing that annoys me about this car. You can try the throttle pedal trick, it seems to work for some and not others(didn't work for me). Dunno if some people do it differently or if its just a placebo effect.

Either way, give it some time and it should return to "normal"

Yup, your ECU should re-learn it about 50 miles or so accordingly to your driving.

i had this same equivalent TSB performed on my BRZ this past weekend since i was getting a free oil change at the dealership and the opposite happened. i could swear that it immediately felt it had better acceleration and smoother run up the revs. i was surprised because i didn't expect to feel any difference at all, as i thought that it just affected engine idling with the AC.

I thought I would provide a quick update. I don't have 50 miles on it after the TSB work was done but I did try the pedal trick and unfortunately I don't think it did anything. The throttle response off the line is still a bit sluggish but it maybe learning as it seems to be revving a little faster once I get going. Once I get 50 miles on it I will post another update.

It actually affects the engine idle WITHOUT AC...not with. In your situation I'd be concerned that your dealer didn't actually install the ECU update...

ah - it's not the same exact TSB then. the 11-136-14 TSB states "engine idle RPM decrease/instability when the A/C cycles off" - which to me, means the A/C has to be on first, in order to cycle the compressor off. Otherwise it'd state "with the A/C off".

well, whatever they did, the car seems to run better than before. if they didn't actually reflash the ECU even though the paperwork states that they did, it'd be fraud.

as CNK said, resetting or flashing ECU, relearning process is there. drive several days and you'll be fine
