Bolt Conversion Adapters BAD?

Is having a bolt conversion adapter to fit rims on a widebody bad? Ive heard that it puts a lot of pressure on your hub. Anyone have any insight on this because I have seen a lot of widebodies use these adapters and never thought twice about it.
