Similarities to the 2000GT

I noticed something interesting today. The FT 86 ii concept seems to have taken styling cues from the 2000GT. I'd never caught the details on the
GT before as they always seem to be painted white, but have a look at this. Note that the front fender flares protrude above and into the hood. See also the creased bulge in the rear fender and the psuedo double bubble roof.

I'd even go so far as to say that the FT's wheels are based on the GT's.

Both are beautiful but I don't really see it. The 2000GT is similar in shape to a lot of cars from that era. Just think about the 240Z or the Jaguar E Type or the Ferrari 365GT. I know the 240Z is UGLY in comparison to the 2000GT, just saying that they are similar.

Just. No.

I can see why you would say that, but it doesn't really. Bulging fenders front and rear aside, they don't really share much else.

That's all I'm saying they do share.

Toyota JP took the original FT86 concept and added fenders and roof creases that resemble those on the 2000GT. Other than the silly little vents and the overly aggressive front and rear bumper covers, that's all that really changed between the first and second concepts. That and they made the hood longer (hello 2000GT). I'd always thought that the FT86ii was the boy racer version of the original concept. That the bulging fenders and psuedo double bubble roof were just tacked on to make the car look more aggressive. But it really seems to me that those shapes have a history in Toyota.

I see it. Before even reading the opening post, I just stared at the pics for a minute and saw the design inspiration.

I must amit when I saw the 1st concept, What popped staight into my mind was the S800 and GT2000.
But after having a look at pics of them they didnt look to similar... apart from being a rwd 2dr coupe with and the 800 with a boxer twin.

The elements are there between the two. I think those that don't see it aren't looking at individual styling elements and are seeing too much at once. FWIW, the FR-S concept flows the three elements together more harmoniously than the FT-86 II

The front fenders are also similar to the C3 Corvette, which IMO is a good thing.

I think the mk3 looks much better than the 2000gt. I just dont care for the soft lines of the gt.
