I saw this same thing happen at Blytheville a few years ago.

IIRC, aftermarket wheels were rubbing brake calipers and the owner "shaved" down the back of the spokes for clearance.

I was about to say that it looks like the wheel didn't break but he broke the studs/forgot to tighten the lugs, went and checked the youtube comments before shooting my mouth off and lo and behold:

This is why people pay lots of money for good wheels or only stick to the proven stuff.

Has anyone heard of a stock wheel breaking? Kind of a loaded question but genuinely curious.

This happened up here too. Not the same wheel mfg, but literally broke in the same fashion. Scary to think if you were marshalling at the time.

Just to play devils advocate...

It could be bad metallurgy, a flaw in the manufacturing process. It's hard to find a wheel manufacturer that hasn't had a wheel fail in that way.

Also, what is the history of this wheel? Is it new? Is it used? How many miles did it rotate? What conditions does it live through?

There's so many possibilities of cause, and you could even analyze some of these with the left over contents.

^^^ Focus ST is not easy on it's front wheels, lots of heat, lots of forces get put into them.

No wheel lasts forever, and the guy mentions in the comments he's in touch with the mfg and is optimistic they will take care of him with a replacement set.

In counterpoint. If the good manufacturers that actually check metallurgy and have strict quality control programs can have wheels break (which they certainly do) then the odds sky rocket for some of these cheap manufactures. I personally know way to many people that had catastrophic failure from cheap wheels to believe the whole "they are just as good" theories. There are things you can cheap out on but wheels should never be one of them.
Ok let's hear from all the guys that will say how they never had an issue with their Walmart wheels.
