Hey guys, so I'm planning on getting the JDL catted UEL (UEL for boxer rumble & catted because of inspection and smell) and pairing that with either the perrin 2.5" resonated catback or the invidia q300. From most of the videos I was able to find with a UEL and catback setup, the noise level is very close to what I would like for a DD, but my main concern is that by leaving the OP/FP stock I may be losing out on decent gains by not going full header back? I've read the posts covering the stock OP/FP vs aftermarket 2.5" but it seems like its pretty split on whether it actually makes a difference or not. The most important thing for me is keeping my exhaust tame (I'm aware that headers will significantly increase noise) as to avoid waking my neighbors when I leave for work early in the morning. So my question is are the gains worth the noise, and for anyone that started with headers and catback first, then later added an aftermarket OP/FP, did you notice any major gains and was the noise increase significantly or slightly louder versus when you just had the H/CBE?
As for which OP/FP I would get, I'm considering the JDL 2.5" Overpipe/Ultra quite front pipe combo.

You're already missing out on gains getting a catted header, so I wouldn't be too worried about the difference of the FP/OP.
Also, you're probably already going to be waking the neighbors with just a UEL and catback. I have the JDL UEL and nameless axleback and it was loud as shit on cold starts, until I modified it. Better get those quiet cold start mods in your tune

I started off with a 3" perrin catback and left everything else stock. After about 9 months, I switched to the jdl uel, jdl op, jdl ultra quiet fp, and a different catback and my new set up is actually quieter than before.
I would definitely recommend the ultra quiet fp if you're looking to keep things "tame". Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I can't imagine changing the overpipe is going to make much difference in sound, its just a metal pipe replacing another metal pipe.
The front pipe on the other hand can make a substantial difference. For reference I have a FT86SF catted UEL header, Invidia overpipe and was running the OEM frontpipe and catback. This past weekend I replaced the front pipe with a Berk catted front pipe. I would say the volume about doubled and its really raspy (fart-can) sounding particularly between 2-3K rpm. Apparently the resonator in the OEM front pipe does wonders for removing that awful rasp. Whatever gains it provides is not worth the awful sound it generates. |

I did my exhaust piece by piece and back to front (so catback, front-pipe and over pipe, and then headers). I can tell you that gains from the stock to a 2.5" front-pipe are there, you can feel it, but you can also hear it, it made the car much more loud (almost as much as the headers, and mine were uncatted). If the noise is a concern, get the ultraquiet JDL front-pipe, it will give you some gains while not increasing the sound level much (if at all).

What cat back did you pair the jdl set up with? Quote:

sub'd and waiting with my $$$! This really seems promising, seems similar to JDL's ultra quite front pipe minus the cat. What's your opinion on this front pipe vs JDL's UQFP?

I personally think Fujitsubo is better but Im a Fujitsubo fan boy haha. It's an expensive item...and in terms of a front pipe you can buy way way cheaper. But, if you want quality, Fujitsubo is one of the best. The other thing with JDL is that the UQFP is catted, while this is cat-less which will give better flow and less restriction. However if you go cat-less header, I'd recommend going catted FP. The Fujitsubo FP is great for people who want to keep the stock header or go with a catted aftermarket header.

I did the catback first. Very nice sound, no power gains what so ever. After that I did the over and front-pipe together. There were gains there, in the 5-8hp I would estimate. The sound tone didnt change, but the volume did, it basically just got much louder, but no rasp or drone (that wasnt there before at least, nothing new I mean). Then I did the headers and Ecutek tuned. That gave me the most gains, felt around double what I gained from the over pipe and front pipe. The dyno showed a 32bhp gain over stock at that point. The headers made the car unbelievable loud. Louder than some straigh piped cars I see at the track. |

I wanted the Fujitsubo Super Ex mainifold (header) catted EL because it's very quiet, but it cost $2500.00CDN + a custom tune...I'm looking at like $3500.00....no thanks. You're better of getting a 4.5+ Final drive for the cost of a catted header and custom tune and will probably enjoy the car way more! The final drive with installation will be under $2000.00CDN.
