Accessing "hidden" gear in an auto

I have an auto gt86, and pretty much always drive in manual mode except when using cruise control. I keep finding myself in a position where 5th is too high and 4th is too low. In auto there is an extra gear there to fill the gap, a 4.5 gear. Is there any way to access this gear in manual mode?

At 90kph in auto at slight uphill rpm sits at 2krpm, if i put it in manual it rises to 2.5krpm in 4th gear. Changing up to 5th gives 1.6krpm.

Numbers are approx and by memory, but it is consistent.

I am prepared to be laughed at if there is something i'm missing btw:p

You likely feeling the torque converter "lockup" most modern autos do this for fuel economy

YES, PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AND HOLD THE SHIFT BUTTON AND SHIFT UP HALF WAY

I don't think that would constitute a different gear ratio, it's just allowing some slip when it's not locked, so the engine revs higher.

Accessing "hidden" gear in an auto

Is it possible to code to show the current auto gear you are currently on? Just like when you in manual gear mode, it shows via M1 - M5 - M8 with each shift.....
