Toda Pulley - Confusing Torque Spec

Hi guys,

I'm just about to install Toda lightweight pulley set. However, when I see the torque instruction, I get a bit confused.

(I am quoting exactly like the instruction).

Tighting torque (Only to be used as a reference)

Crank Pully bolt = 20 N.m (2.04 kgf.m) + 90 deg
Water pump pully bolt = 14 N.m (1.43 kgf.m)
Alternator pully bolt = 108 N.m (11 kgf.m)

I dont understand the "90 deg" part. Could anyone explain it to me?

It means once you get to torque spec, add another 90 degree rotation (essentially quarter turn).

I.e. 360 degrees is a full turn.

First torque the crank pulley bolt to 20N.m (this seems low)
Second mark the bolt to the pulley
Third tighten the bolt further 90deg this should misalign the markings you have by 90deg

Yes 20Nm seems very low for a crank pulley bolt. Typically they are 120Nm. The rest of the instructions look to be correct and very typical for this.

I would call the manufacturer to see if they made an error or you can see if you can find the stock torque spec.

20NM + 90 degrees ends up being pretty high. 120NM + 90 degrees would likely snap the bolt.

when starting at 20Nm, +90 degrees will maybe get you to 50 to 60Nm which is no where near what you need for a crank pulley.

yes my 120Nm + 90 was exaggerated for this application but is typical of the press in style crank pulleys- I was just trying to make a point that 20Nm was way too low.

Both perrin and raceseng crank pulley installation instructions tell you to go to 94ft.lbs, which, when converted to Nm, is 127.45Nm. I assume this is the factory torque spec. I would use this

I think you underestimate the amount of additional torque that a 90* rotation would net.

Agrees with above, this bolt torques fast past the mid teens. 90 degrees would bring it to spec.

I would follow the Toda instructions.

Thanks guys, Adding 90 deg turn makes a lot of sense now.

How about the water pump pully torque? It says 14 N.m without any 90 deg turn, isn't it extremely too low? Even a much smaller alternator pully requires 108 N.m. This just doesn't make any sense

check out the shop manual, these are the OEM torques

@puma you're right! I just looked it up on brz engine manual, those are indeed OEM specified torque. Thanks a lot, now i'm feeling confidence
