2018 BRZ manual with the old engine

Hey guys, just got my 2018 BRZ and noticed at the dealer that it has the old engine, looked at a few. same.

they do not have the updated diff ratio too.

Does anyone have the same experience? This is going to make ordering parts difficult, since i got the 2017+ air filter and found out it does not fit unfortunately i cannot return it since i ordered it from the US. Hopefully all the other parts are pre 17 i assume, since i am pulling the trigger on an oil cooler soon.

I guess it depends where the cars come from. Europe didn't get the new engines, they couldn't make them legal.

Is the car an automatic? I can't explain the diff, but the automatic has the old intake

Why got it in the first response. Dubai has the European spec cars. This means no upgrades for them in 17.
Or more accurately they got the upgraded engine components and block but not the intake and exhaust and diff power upgrades.

On the MT only. In the US, Canada, Japan and Australia. Not everywhere.

well right, either you got a red intake which signifies the change otherwise tis all the same. didn't think there was a point in mentioning the countries that got the update since no one else got the intake change :P

Not quite all the same. They all have some of the upgrades. Not having the red intake doesn't mean it is the "old" engine it just means you didn't get that whopping extra 5HP. There are still many improvements even without the HP gain so it is worth being clear.

Ok so I guess I got the new one cause mines red, iv been reading around and trying to figure out what would be best for the BRZ engine as far a durability and life if the engine , a supercharger or a turbo, from what iv read you don’t want to go above 7psi cause the engine can’t take it...so I was thinking somthing around 5psi for longevity, and info ? I’m not very auto savvy

As I have said many times they are all "new ones". The changes made in 17 will allow you to go a bit higher boost than the "old" engine but there really is no safe point when adding boost. There is an increase in risk as soon as you change anything from stock so it is just a matter of what level of risk you are willing to accept. If keeping boost turned way down you are headed into a spiral of diminishing returns on costs and may be better off just staying NA but going E85 and a good tune.

It's also worth noting no two drivers drive alike. Somebody who bounces off the rev limiter daily, versus somebody a bit more conservative will have an impact on motor health/life. Adding boost will only exacerbate wear and tear.

You've got to pay to play. Don't add boost if you can't afford to rebuild if it blows up tomorrow.
