You'd fail your UK driving test doing that. Of course having passed their test most people do what you describe (BTW here if you take the test in an auto you're not allowed to drive a manual, but hardly anybody has an auto).
25 years of driving, and I've only driven an auto once and didn't like it very much. But I still struggled with this car. Thanks to the high bite point (better when you adjust it), lack of clutch feel and the way the throttle pedal seems to go from 0 to 90% in 1/2 inch of travel it's the most difficult manual car I've driven and the first few weeks I was kangarooing out of junctions like a learner.
