These things usually do. As soon as somebody says "MT or AT" you can be pretty sure what direction it will go in.

For what it's worth, I also am learning driving a manual on this car after owning and only driving an automatic for 8 years. One thing that helped me tremendously was removing the clutch return spring about a month ago. This got rid of the uncomfortable "dead zone" that my clutch began to develop and gave it a smooth transition all the way through depression. I do not know if this will help you specifically, but it is worth looking in to. Here is a link to a tutorial: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...=clutch+spring Either way, enjoy your car and best of luck!

Interesting. That isn't at all how my father taught me. He wouldn't allow me on the road if I needed the hand brake. Not slighting anyone that uses this technique. His drivers test was much worse than anything a state official could throw at me. I'm glad I learned as I did. I had to hold the car on a steep incline slipping the clutch before getting to go solo. I use the hand brake when I park the car and of course leave it in gear. It's such a habit I do it in the garage too. Oh well to each their own.. Enjoy and Tcoat I have no .... To measure in this discussion. 😉. I was genuinely curious if things have changed in the decades since I learned. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

How to drive a manual tranny vehicle:
1) Step on the ckutch 2) Select the gear 3) Release the clutch I taught 3 daughters at age 15 to drive stick (914 Porsche, MR2), my wife at age 42 (Nissan Hardbody), and my 12 year old grandaughter ('13 FRS). No cars or girls were harmed in the process. |

Back to driver's ed. As some of you may have figured it out already from the kinds of errors I make writing in English, I am originally from Poland. Driver's exams used to be really tough in Poland when I took mine around 1990. US (VA) exam that I had to take a few years ago was a joke in comparison. Since 1990 the exams in Poland have become even tougher. One of multiple specific requirements now is starting on a steep uphill, with mandatory use of handbrake, you fail if the car stalls or rolls back more than 20 centimeters. MT of course. So, apparently, the issue is treated very differently in different places and by different people. |

When on an incline I use neutral and the (foot) brake. I only had to prove I could hold the car without braking assistance. I understand and respect your opinion but I just don't share it. I don't roll back at stops if I do it's minimal and certainly nothing close to 20cm. I've never rolled into even the most determined tailgater and I've been at this over 25 years. What works for me or you may not work for the next person. I would be a hazard trying to use the hand brake (aka emergency brake). I would bet most folks who learned manual before hand brakes don't not use it either. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Agreeing to disagree, I cannot resist asking for a clarfication:
Quote:
Why would this be a hazard? I mean, you hold the car on the incline suing the foot brake while the car is in neutral. Then you press the clutch, enagage the first gear, pull the hand brake, move you right foot to the accelerator (without unnecessary rush, the car won't roll because of the hand brake), then smoothly release the clutch, press the accelerator, and release hand brake all three at the same time. I can understand that you would consider it excessive, because you don't feel rushed and you are quick enough that the car won't roll back. But I don't see a hazard. |

Engage parking brake at the stop and when it's time to go, give some throttle and start releasing the clutch and when you feel the car working against the brake to get uphill you can gently release the hand brake. I dont know if that helps or further stirs the pot but I'd prefer this method to slipping the clutch. My footwork is sloppy enough as is on the track to burn the clutch up even more on hills lol
