Snap, crackle, pop over 70mph
 

Over 70 mph, I get this popping noise from the rear like a flapping piece of stiff plastic. Anyone have this, or better yet, find a fix?

I'd check all of the wheel well liners, and bumper connections.

Had an issue similar to this with my CT200h, one of the plastic bits under the car was just loose.

Is it coming from the exterior or interior?

I know there was a TSB about a rear interior deck rattle/pop in the 2013 cars...

the plastic around the wheel wells and the panels under the car have too much play. I noticed this during 70 mph trips to Myrtle Beach. What I did was caulk the plastic around the wheel wells and then spayed them with under coating. Also, stop the movement of the under panels with, yes, clear caulk (others have added washers to keep the under panels from moving). The plastic flutter sound that I was hearing at 70mph is now gone.

Thanks BRZnut. So did you unsnap the connectors and run a thread of caulk along the edge? What type of caulk did you use (Home Depot sells dozens of different types)? What did the undercoating do? - keep the panels from flexing?

Did not unsnap the connectors. Just ran clear caulk along the edge of the plastic wheel wells connecting it the metal lip that curves into the wheel area. Also, ran it on top of the plastic where ever different plastic panels would meet. ...Then just used the under coating inside the wheel wells, mainly to stiffen up the plastic and to reduce the sound from the wheel wells.


The panels under the car where "connected" with caulk to keep them from moving , but did not spray under coating.

It is latex based so it is not sticky, can be smoothed easily, can be painted, and cleans up with water (pure silicone caulks are a mess to use plus they are not paintable)

Going to be cold as balls this weekend, I doubt I'll be able to do anything about it. Oddly, I only have the noise from the right rear wheel well. Everything else is perfectly quiet.

So I ended up doing something similar to this... I stuck some felt pieces I cut out of a sheet onto the inner fender everywhere the fender liner touched it. That solved 95% of my noise, so I also ran some felt between the top and bottom pieces of the fender liner. No more f'ing rattles! :thumbup:

All plastic where the felt is? Wouldn't want to hold moisture against any steel sections.

Nope, which is why I stuck the felt to the inside of the fender and not the fender liner. If I stuck it to the fender liner the felt would surely trap dirt and rub through the thin crappy paint on the inside of the fender.
