Turbo help
Not sure if this topic belongs here or somewhere else, if so please place it in the correct section.
My buddy and i will be putting a turbo into his car in the next few months, he has a 2013 FR-S Automatic transmission. My FR-S is a manual and i'm not sure which turbo we should purchase for him. We were considering the Greddy 518v kit or the MAPperformance FA20 precision kit, but i realized a completely stock MANUAL FR-S might have clutch problems with either of these kits, so i'm not sure if they would be the best in an automatic. If anyone could provide me with information on a decent working turbo kit for an automatic kit, it would be much appreciated. |
if you keep the torque low and under 300whp then you don't need a clutch

Personally I'm running 220 torque on an AT with a stage 2 avo turbo, it's been holding up well. I'm not sure what the max torque that would be reliable for an AT though.

It should hold fine in terms of catastrophic failure from failure from what I have read. But from talking to a local tuner on FI cars that have AT the fluid is taking a beating from the extra heat which could lead to premature wear. I would ask in threads for each kit for AT guys and also talk to the companies themselves

Found some old threads for you.
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18868 It states that the auto torque capacity is 300nm which equates to 220 ft lbs. But here's some real world data http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106593 There's a couple autos running 340 - 400 ft lbs reliably. I know AVO Japan has been testing an auto that runs around 260 ft lbs for quite a while now. I would probably stay under 260 ft lbs to keep it safe. As mentioned above, the #1 killer of our transmissions is heat. It's best to get a transmission cooler and high temp auto transmission fluid if you plan on running the car hard for extended periods of time. Personally I run Redline D6. |
Yeah I run a turbo automatic FRS and so far so good. I love not losing boost between shifts :p
