Engine bay
What do you guys use to clean your engine bay?
Do you guys cover up your electric stuff ? I heard I didn't need to since it's a new car but I wanna make sure before I do anything. I was an idiot oil spilled everywhere well slashed everywhere because I didn't properly looked to see if the oil filter had nothing in it before putting a new one on but the old oil filter washer was on while the new one was over it. Just sop up the oil with some old T-shirts.
What remains will help prevent rust. :slap: .......that's for not checking your oil filter. :D humfrz |
Any engine degreeser, low pressure water. Try to avoid the electrical stuff,
Maybe people that have problems are the ones that blast the engine with a pressure washer. Let the degreaser do the work. The water is there just to rinse. |

This the way I clean engine bays.
The only thing I cover is the Alternator, and thats with a plastic bag. You don't have to go crazy with tape either. Remember, anything electrical in the engine bay is water resistant. Also remember, that there is a huge difference between water resistant and water proof. DO NOT use high pressure water, this can force water into places it shouldn't go. Low pressure rinse of the entire engine bay including the bottom of the hood. Spray a All Purpose Cleaner and let it dwell for a few minutes. I would recommend either Adams Polishes or Meguiars. I would then use a lug nut brush to agitate any debris or oil on whatever parts I can reach, including under the hood. For any other parts I cannot reach lower in the bay I would use a wheel woolie. Rinse off the engine bay and then I would use compressed air to get the majority of the water off Then I would spray something like Adams In & Out Spray or Meguiars hyper dressing and I'm done. |

Here's my current way:
Wash it every 3 oil changes at 3-k. Washed mine again today. Didn't dress. Weather not too good. Cover battery, alt, and intake. Used Gunk Foam again. Spent 40min washing. Drove to Starbucks for 20min after. I know many people say, "dont need to cover anything anymore!" But I still prefer to. If I am to do a thorough wash, I wrap every connection where there is a electrical plug. [Done this only once] then use 2 Gunk cans. 1 before its wet, then I rinse, and when engine is wet, I spray 2nd Gunk can and scrub. Then rinse, dry, drive car, let it cool and spray down with hose again. Why twice? Because it will smell of chemicals [Gunk] if I dont. Once its dried, I dress with Gunk Dresser. I dont recommend the Gunk dresser. It kind of smells too much. Chem guys[?] has a better one. I wipe excessive dressing with blue heavy duty towels. I let it sit for an hour or so, wipe again and drive. I recommend taking a good long drive so that smell is burned off. |

I have found your best bet is an automotive APC and or degreaser and some boars hair brushes, followed by a water based dressing if you desire.
