Hey everyone,

New to this community but _really_ hoping somebody can help me out with a long running issue. I have this incredibly annoying rattle coming from what sounds like my rear deck, it's been going on for quite a while and my attempts to take it to multiple dealers have been beyond unsuccessful. Below are a couple of videos demonstrating the problem.

It's a loud "ticking" noise that emanates from what sounds like the rear shelf on the driver's side. I've had a friend lay in the trunk while we drove around and he was pretty sure it was from inside the rear shelf. It seems to occur most frequently over bumps and is present at both low and high speeds, though it comes and goes (but when it happens it's dreadful). Some additional background information:

I have confirmed it is none of the following things:

* Speaker
* License plate (or frame) - have removed both and driven around, sound still occurs
* Plastic (trunk release?) tab in the back of the trunk (it's secured with tape)
* Miscellaneous exposed wiring (it's all been secured and padded)

Additional fixes I've attempted:

* On the FT86 forums somebody suggested bending a certain tab in the trunk (with other users confirming it fixed their issue). This had no effect.
* I have taken The TSB referenced here: (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13451) into the dealer on 3 occasions, and on none of those 3 do I believe they actually even looked at it. It may not be related, but it's the closest thing I've found.

Unfortunately, I am not exactly a _car guy_ and am a bit wary of taking apart the rear deck and (as suggested) "popping" some of the spot welds. Every time I've taken it into the dealer I've received ridiculous explanations (among the worst: "your rear seats weren't latched" -- despite the fact that it is often _worse_ with the seats down) and at this point I've deemed it a waste of my time to continue pursuing dealerships.

I love this car but absolutely cannot stand to drive the thing without the windows down or the radio up any longer. Thanks in advance for your help.

You might try taking everything out of the trunk (including under the trunk cover, i.e. the spare tire and all the tools/jack) and see if the rattle goes away.

Welcome and yes it is the rear deck itself along with the thrid brake light housing. Mine does that too but it's worse when you add a sub.

You do need to stuff that rear deck with some foam or something. If you don't want to do it take it to a local audio shop and tell them.

Look for any potential for plastic or metal rattle coming from the trunk after removing the spare tire and tools, and buy some Dyna Mat (or Hush Mat) to fill in any mysterious spaces that you might find.

@zuko I had the same sound!!!

Mine ended up being the rear bumper corners shifting and the plastic clips taping back and forth while driving. Worst was on the highway at speed.

My main cause was because I added the rally armour mud flaps which when the wind hit them they would flap and make the bumper clips tap.

I fixed it from moving by simply putting a strip of duct tape along the seam of the bumper in the rear wheel wells so that it wouldnt move horizontally back and forth anymore.

Hope that helps man.

Try the following:

1) Stuff foam into the rear deck from the trunk. Your Third brake light wire will lead into it.

2) Use White Lithium Spray and spray the crevices of the trunk (under third brake light).

I also have a slight ticking from my rear deck. It's worse when it's cold.

I had this sound and at first I thought it was coming from the rear deck area. It wasn't.


Turned out to be from movement of the 2 plastic pieces where the drivers side seat belt comes out over. (over your left shoulder). If you look, you will see a smaller upper piece of plastic (which the belt comes out of) and a larger lower one. Where those two pieces meet up, it was making the sound.


What I did was apply clear latex caulk at the joint line. No more noise.

N1rve, I just did that the other day but sadly it didn't seem to have any effect. I will try the White Lithium Spray next, though, thanks.

BRZnut, I have that one as well (at least I'm fairly certain they are two separate sounds). Let me give that a shot and see if it accomplishes anything.

Interesting. So were you experiencing the noise even without the mud flaps? I will check it out, though, really appreciate the tip.

Yeah it still did. Once the bumper became loose, tape was the only fix.
