Is it a clunking, or more like a crunchiness, like worn synchros?

Ashley 08-22-2012 06:44 PM

Its a clunk it shakes the car when i shift into first Say if im sitting at the lights about to go

Sigh-on-Rice 08-22-2012 07:19 PM

Try keep the clutch in, wait for 3 secs, and then put it in 1st gear. If you don't get the noise that way, then I believe it's normal. My other MT did this also.

kendalldwhite 08-22-2012 08:07 PM

mine does it to. my mustang has been doing it for the passed 100000 miles and nothings broke yet

pinoyplaya 08-22-2012 08:08 PM

My clutch does that.

Also, today, when I tried to switch from 2nd to 3rd gear at around 4k RPM, I grinded for some reason. Hmmm. I've never grinded while upshifting.

I think its normal, I just posted a Thread about my transmission making sounds a couple days ago. Apparently I think its normal. My trans. makes a clunk like sound too. Im guessing its the way they built it... and I've just had my car for 6 days so far. I found out on mine, when taking off from a dead stop at 1st gear, it will shake if you let go of the clutch and not accelerating while around 1500rpm or lower...

probably a combination of the transmission not fully warmed up and moving the shifter before fully pressing the clutch pedal in. if you ever feel a slight grind, pop it back to neutral, let go of the clutch pedal, and try again. don't force it in gear.

Well, its not a loud grind. Its just a grind that you feel on the gear shifter. It didnt make any noise or anything. You can just feel some force on the shifter then it goes in gear. Its like a millisecond.

Currently my BRZ has around 750 miles. But today I went to like 6k RPM :( I couldnt resist! I needed some taste.

Need to drive more to break it in lol.

But I think its already broken in.

i wouldn't worry about hitting 6k rpm once in a while. this isn't 1960s anymore. it's pretty hard to destroy modern engines.

the shifter doesn't feel as smooth when the transmission hasn't warmed up yet. shift below 3k rpm until your engine/tranny has warmed up. i get the same feeling on mine.

At least im not the only one hearing it seems like it only does it when im sitting at the lights in neutral then i throw it into first. I called the dealership yest becuz my car cldnt start it was locked up n he said he never heard of any issues w the car...yea right lol

Ashley 08-23-2012 11:59 AM

Yup this is how i shift does seem a lot smoother plus im scared to take it over 3 rpm until it breaks in im babying it lol

you can go up to 4k rpm for break in period according to the manual.
under 'emergency situations' above that

Ashley 08-23-2012 12:14 PM

I guess i need to pull out the manual n read it huh lol

it's good to know, there isn't anything in particular that is special to this car from my perspective - its like any other car ..
but there are some funny lines in it .. ie. do not use jack to jack car :]

New Vehicle break-in driving (the first 1000 miles [1600km])

The performance and long life of your vehicle are dependent on how you handle and care for your vehicle while it is new. Follow these instructions during the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
  • Do not allow the engine to exceed 4000 rpm except in an emergency.
  • Do not drive at one constant engine or vehicle speed for a long time, either fast or slow.
  • Avoid starting suddenly and rapid acceleration, except in an emergency.
  • Avoid hard breaking, except in an emergency.
The same break-in procedures should be applied to an overhauled engine, newly mounted engine or when brake pads or brake linings are replaced with new ones.

You need to fully compress the clutch, then just let it fall into first, like take your time after you depress the clutch then put it into first. I've noticed that if I clutch, then wait a second or two, it will just gracefully fall into first. If I clutch then try to ram it into first it clunks pretty bad.

Is it too late to respond? lol My 2017 clunks when I fully depress the clutch at a stand still in neutral before I shift in to first gear. 65,000 miles car.

Wait for the friction disc along with all the gears to quit spinning before engaging one of them. That's all.
