Toyota developing a new turbocharged engine - report

Toyota developing a new turbocharged engine - report

2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid - 23.8.2011

Could debut in 2013

Toyota and Gazoo Racing are reportedly developing a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with direct injection.
According to the Detroit Bureau, the Japanese automaker is shifting focus from hybrid development to building smaller displacement engines. While they won't offer the same fuel efficiency as hybrids, turbocharging is cheaper and has more of a performance image.
The publication also says an "aggressive development program [is] underway" and a number of small and mid-sized models could adopt the new engine. Nothing is official, but speculation suggests it may debut on the JDM Crown as early as 2013. The engine could eventually be offered on the next-generation Corolla and the Camry.

Not so fast, turbo only improves fuel economy on a smaller engine. Adding turbo always reduces fuel economy. You have to start with something that gets better fuel economy, and then add turbo to make the acceleration "acceptable".

agreed however in the way that turbo is applied to getting better fuel economy is in the power it's sold at. Hence the Eco-boost V6 taking the place a of a V8. So now when you are out of the throttle, you're only feeding fuel for 3.5L instead of 5.4L.

It's all in the marketing of 'turbo efficiency' and we both know that. Plus the turbos are usually the size of a glazed donut to carry the low end tq/boost. It then can drive higher EGR flow etc.

Toyota sounds sick of Hyundai stealing their pie.

Efficiency-wise they're probably looking to do something like the Sonata. Turbo 4 instead of big V6.

Turbo is cool. I'd like to see Toyota get back into turbocharging engines, even if it starts small like this, once they're using turbos again, it'll be that much easier to do it for a performance engine too.
