U.S. TRD Lowering Springs & OEM Fog lights

I was told by a local Toyota dealer that the OEM fog light kit and the TRD lowering springs cannot be installed on the FR-S together. The salesman didn't know why but apparently there was an indication on their system showing that notification regarding the compatibility.

Can anyone help a noob out why that is?

The firmer ride from the TRD lowering springs will affect the fog light wiring. It's a known issue.

The salesman is correct - they cannot be installed together. The fog lights should be installed in the bumper cover, and the springs should be installed in the wheel housings.

He is doubly correct in that the fog lights must be installed by the dealership luminati technician, and the springs by the bouncy castle technician. They don't get along.

Sarcasm aside, the salesman is correct. It is in the install instructions for the fog lights. At the top it just says conflicts with lowering spring, but its California only. Not sure why its California only. As far as I know Cali cars only have emissions differences, most cars don't even have this anymore. I guess see if you can find the differences between California spec and the rest.

In other words, fog lights are known to cause cancer in the state of California. If everything in California is known to cause cancer, maybe it's the state itself that's the problem.


Actually it probably has to do with state laws about lights within so many inches of the ground. It probably conflicts with laws in other states too, but California is the only one to actually check.

This is what I thought, too, that it might have to do with lowering the car's height and having essentially unnecessary lights running. I can't think of any mechanical or engineering reason why the two items cannot be installed on the same car. It's not like lowering it is going to cause the harnesses for the lights to fail or be at risk for some damage. They don't hang out in space under the car waiting to get snagged by something.

Could also be a thing of the lights being at risk of getting hit and broken by debris being closer to the ground, but it's not like the TRD kit makes that drastic of a drop that the lights are suddenly not nearly 6+ inches above the ground anymore.

California just making regulations for the sake of making regulations and telling you how to live your life.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Yea I just never understood why the two will conflict each other; makes no sense.

Just found this on ebay (not sure if you're ok to post ebay links here), and it also states that California doesn't allow the fog lights and springs together....absolutely non sense.

I did not know this. I will immediately go out and remove one or the other from my 2015 FRS to bring the car back into harmony

They have both been in place since I purchased it new in Minnesota in September of 2014. The OEM Fogs were a Port Installed Option and the TRD spring kit, sway bars and brake pads were dealer installed before I took possession of the car.

Maybe things have changed as you did not mention what model year you were asking the sales person about. Possibly it is a locality issue. The only thing that I can think "being an inch or so closer to the ground" might have to do with the fog lights would be beam alignment.
