As an interesting comparison (at least to me), through March, Chevrolet has sold 44,674 of the C7 Corvettes in the US and Canada since its introduction last year and 8,517 this calendar year, almost as many as the total global sales of the FR-S since introduction.

Overall, according to this chart, the FR-S is #91 in sales in the US for this year, with decrease of 28.6% over 2014.

The BRZ is #111 with a decrease of 43.9% over last year's sales.

And since they are mentioned on this forum all the time the new Mustang (#20) has boosted sales by 52% but that will fall off, and does appear to be hurting #32 Camaro sales, which are down 11% for the year.

We are about ready to kick off the 4th model year. This is pretty standard for cars like the Miata, S2000, etc. Lots of used, low mile examples available out there.

I expect you will see an increase in sales as we exit a brutal winter for the eastern half of the US and then sales will plummet when the 2016 ND Mazda MX-5 hits the market as people looking to purchase an affordable sports car will then have a "new shiny" to want.

The car has been for sale less than 3 full years.

I think the sales drop is a little faster than normal.

If I recall correctly, first deliveries in Japan were in January, 2012, so worldwide, it has passed the three year mark. First deliveries in the US were May, 2012.

Not sure what to compare it to. All models drop off over time if there is not a refresh, or if there is an anticipated new model coming out. To your point, I don't think most fall off 30 or 40% quite as quickly as US sales have though, but I don't watch sales that closely.

Someone with more time than I care to spend could got to goodcarsbadcars.com and pull stats for a few similar models to see how they did before and after introduction I suppose.

Like I said, they are getting ready for the 4th model year... We are at the end of the 3rd.

Anyway, Miata was down 9%, 27%, 29%, 19%, 12% year over year the years following when the NC was released. It got a 12% bump (a whopping 800 additional units) in 2012 before continuing the double digit free fall of 10% and 17% in 2013 and 2014. The twins saw a 19% drop from 2013 to 2014.

The Miata has it a little worse because it is a good deal less practical, though.

Here's the Nissan 350Z and 370Z (introduced in 2009)
http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01...s-figures.html

Here's the Mazda RX-8
http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01...s-figures.html

Here's the Honda S2000
http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2013/06...sa-canada.html

MX-5
http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01...s-figures.html

The only one that remained flat through year 3 was the S2000 and that didn't last very long. Hell the 370Z has sold fewer units altogether than the 350Z sold in 2003+2004 alone. It's foolish to expect anything different here, history repeats itself, especially with RWD Japanese sports cars, this goes all the way back to the 60's with Datsuns and the first Honda S line up through the Z's and RX's.

It was done after the fact, along with some of the other trinkets we received along the way, so it depends on whether or not the owner installed it, but yes. It was a console plaque and a plaque for the glove box. It came in a CNC milled "86" metal box that I really liked. Glove box plaque has the "signatures" of all the folks that worked on the design.

The problem with the plaques is that they weren't attached before delivery so not everyone put them on the cars, and if I'm not mistaken one or two may have even sold theirs on eBay.

We had the choice in Long Beach to decide if we wanted numbers or something more generic and the group decision was to all have them say "1 of 86" so they are all the same.

Picture of the box and the contents below. Also a thread on it here...
