Just got tweeted this by Toyota EU, very interesting read. Again, no massively new facts but good to read a hands on review rather than just speculation over looks and figures.
He does note that "the engine does benefit from Toyota’s D4S direct injection, which helps towards a C02 figure of around 160g/km – a similarly powerful Renaultsport Clio manages 190g/km", not exactly the sort of figures we want to be hearing about but its something! Hopefully means it won't piss petrol in the way some sports cars do... |

170 lb ft? And it trounces a miata in the fun to drive arena? I would be highly impressed if this is true.

Yeah 3 stars is poor considering the low centre of gravity and all of the testing put into this car running it alongside the Porsche Cayman. Oh well hopefully like Car Magazine state this was an early test mule and things have been tweaked for production.

I'm sure stuff has changed with the handling, because they got the car in May, and 4 months have passed. and during that time they've been to the nurburgring and did that nurburgring race. i'm still hopeful

The Toyota FT-86 is great news for enthusiasts: it’s affordable, frugal and relatively practical. You also don’t have to be a driving deity to explore its limits. If anything, we’d adjust the high-speed, on-limit balance (firmer front end, more progressive transition into oversteer, tighter differential), but that doesn’t undo the underlying fact that this is a great car, and one that trounces its closest rival, the Mazda MX-5, in the fun stakes.

I like the sounds of this, and im sure some handleing bugs have been worked out since then, plus coilovers will be one of the first mods I do anyways.

As far as the 160g/km goes I think that's a carbon dioxide emission measure so that's 160 grams of CO2 per 1 kilometer driven. I think. So I could be way off. Last edited by keiri; 10-28-2011 at 10:12 AM. Reason: bbCode subcript tag removal |

Now I DO NOT have to buy a Miata ND to have some serious fun.
For me it is the BRZ vs the BMW 2 series coupe (no pics yet) |

Maybe I'm the only one that's actually curious (I think everyone else is ), but... :P
"it’s a six-speed unit based on the eight-speeder in the high-performance Lexus ISF." Huh, I wonder how that feels like. |

The platform is going to be great. We all know there will be tons of aftermarket handling stuff available right? If you aren't completely happy with the way it handles, change something. I bet at least 75% won't remain stock anyway. I wouldn't sweat the handling comment at all. As the others have said. The test mule was driven and written about months ago.

Yes, 160g/km is only CO2 emissions, but it means that the engine is efficient regardless. Lower CO2 usually means less fuel burned but has no direct relation of actual MPG.
This review is really exciting. A few things stand out: Toyota had better make the nannies completely defeatable; I want to turn TC and SC OFF for winter time shenanigans. Also, I find it odd that they say it trounces the MX-5 and then give it 3 stars for handling. The MX-5 is one of the best handling cars in terms of driver feedback and predictability. But it's certainly high praise for a test mule. And this 'R' version that he spoke of, I want the Brembos and the mechanical LSD but none of the other stuff. I just can't believe that there isn't an NDA on this sort of thing. Hyundai had a complete NDA on driving impressions on the Veloster until the day it was released. The fact that they've published this really surprises me. Last edited by no_name; 10-28-2011 at 10:27 AM. |
