I'm considering: Trd Lowering springs on yellow koni's. Trd front and rear sways. 9" wheels with Re71r Brigestones. Oft 93 tune , Oft uel header and overpipe. Nameless Track muffler.Auto transmission. Would this setup, in the hands of a "good" driver be nationally competitive in STX. Am I kidding myself with the konis?
Or do I "have" to go coilovers. I'm a firm believer in "set it and forget it" & keeping it ssimple

Just that mod list, not competitive I think.

How will you be getting over -3 camber to front?

You'll be softly sprung and over weight, and the atx will make you slower out of most gates... The konis aren't specifically the problem.

x2 what CJD said I think the AT will hurt competitiveness more than the Koni's will

In my experience you won't be nationally competitive simply because of the automatic transmission. When these cars came out in 2012, I was impatient and settled on the auto transmission. At a local test and tune that year, a friend brought his manual FRS and we swapped cars while also swapping my Dunlop Star Specs on his car to keep the variables identical. On a 50 second course we were consistently .7 - .9 seconds faster in the manual FRS.

The transmission aside, I think you would still be fighting an uphill battle with the Koni/TRD spring setup. It will be a nice improvement over stock, but I don't think it can compete with some of the proven coilover setups out there.

You could certainly be competitive locally, but agreed on the auto and lack of coilovers holding you back.

Thanks for your input. I forgot to add adjustable top hats. I think I will keep saving for some coilovers. KW v3.. I think. I'll keep enjoying local events and national autox when it comes close. Thanks for saving me the long trip to Lincoln in the near future.

Match Tours if you can get to one are a great way to dip your toe into a national event.

I went to Nats in my under perp 128 in 2014 and finished like 27th. It was a blast. Lincoln is more than just running autox

Silly Question,
85% autox .15% DD. Slight overdriving style? Ohlins or KW K3s? Good Luck all At NATIONALS!

I would recommend a double adjustable. The KW V3's (I assume you meant V no K) are pretty common choice.

I would throw out there the Racecomp Tarmac 2's in that price range too. They are basically a revalved/reworked KW shock intended for more track/autox usage.

Look at spring rates. Don't know what the 'right' thing is but most competitive are 400# or higher rates.

Ohlins MI20 343# F/R
Ohlins MP20 228#/171# F/R
KW V3 230#/285# F/R
RCE T2 400# F/R

The old Ohlins kit might be a good compromise setup, but I don't think it'll be competitive at the top of the field off the shelf unless you can really wheel and tune the car. The newer Ohlins kit and the V3's are softer than most lowering springs which won't handle the sticky tires too well unless you run stiff swaybars and like being on the bumpstops.

Neither. If you're going 85% DD, those are options... You won't be disappointed with a good setup and more appropriate spring rates. RCE T2 is where I'd start, just because it's got the right starting spring rates and is valved really well. It's not the only option... A few clicks softer on the T3 is almost comfortable on Chicago city potholes, but is excellent pretty much everywhere else. Road trips no problem, and better rated by my wife than the Tein SRC I had before (granted, much higher spring rates) which still passed the knitting test.

I had Ohlins MI20 with 343/400 spring rates (front/rear) and for autocross I just went a step stiffer on my front bar than everyone else did to get the same balance. The damping was sublime and I really liked how it drove. For a more autocross focused setup I'd start at 400/400 spring rates... Good luck finding a set of Ohlins MI20 though.

Also, double adjustable dampers give you more stuff to play with, but if you don't know what you're doing you can very easily make the car worse.
