The mechanical advantage a manual has over an automatic
Before you decide what ratio to get for your automatic, you should take a look at the mechanical advantage manual's have over your automatic. Here are some per-gear speeds to show the mechanical advantage a M/T has over an A/T, with higher final drive gears in the automatic.
(higher RPM's have the advantage) 5.71 a/t vs 4.10 m/t 1st@25mph = 6893/5072 a/t 2nd@30mph = 4816/3673 a/t 3rd@60mph = 5162/5174 m/t 4th@60mph = 4676/4072 a/t 5th@60mph = 3334/3357 m/t 6th@60mph = 2721/2575 a/t a/t 4 out of 6, m/t 2 5.29 a/t vs 4.10 m/t 1st@25mph = 6386/5072 a/t 2nd@30mph = 4462/3673 a/t 3rd@60mph = 4782/5174 m/t 4th@60mph = 4332/4072 a/t 5th@60mph = 3089/3357 m/t 6th@60mph = 2521/2575 m/t a/t 3 out of 6, m/t 3 4.88 a/t vs 4.10 m/t 1st@25mph = 5891/5072 a/t 2nd@30mph = 4116/3673 a/t 3rd@60mph = 4412/5174 m/t 4th@60mph = 3996/4072 m/t 5th@60mph = 2849/3357 m/t 6th@60mph = 2326/2575 m/t a/t 2 out of 6, m/t 4 4.56 a/t vs 4.10 m/t a/t 2 out of 6, m/t 4 1st@25mph = 5504/5072 a/t 2nd@30mph = 3846/3673 a/t 3rd@60mph = 4122/5174 m/t 4th@60mph = 3734/4072 m/t 5th@60mph = 2662/3357 m/t 6th@60mph = 2173/2575 m/t a/t 2 out of 6, m/t 4 4.10 a/t vs 4.10 m/t 1st@25mph = 4949/5072 m/t 2nd@30mph = 3458/3673 m/t 3rd@60mph = 3706/5174 m/t 4th@60mph = 3357/4072 m/t 5th@60mph = 2394/3357 m/t 6th@60mph = 1954/2575 m/t a/t 0 out of 6, m/t 6 So, even upgrading an A/T to the highest gear available, 5.71 to 1, only gives an A/T the advantage in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th. Then if you want to beat a manual in a race with your automatic, it better be a short race, and you best have a 5.71 rear-end and F.I. I chose a 4.88 ratio for my automatic because I plan on adding F.I. eventually. In the meantime, it will get me better acceleration in the city, and maybe even better city MPG. |

Not defending, pointing out the mechanical advantages of the M/T car. Even upgrading to the highest FD available, the A/T loses advantage in 3rd and 5th to the stock M/T. If anything I'm showing just how and why the manual is better than the automatic.

My silly rant......
These manuals are better posts "because" .... The hyperfragulator offers greater leverage when using the blamethrower, crack me up. Toyburu did as much if not more R&D for the auto than the stick. It's not an afterthought nor second fiddle to the stick. Does it accelerate slower in certain gears...sure. Do you deserve your own Old Spice commercial because you are a manly man for driving stick, why not.. Slowly but surely more guys are getting a taste of the auto and discovering...... Wow it's not so bad. The shoveler needs leverage, I just want a great real world fast paddle shift Trans that returns smiles and will withstand most any mods with minimal upgrades and return high speed cruising bordering on civil. I'm confident that no one upgrading the auto tranny in this car is running naturally aspirated.

Yes and no. The down shift rev matching is pretty nice. And for someone with arthritus in their clutch knee it's the deciding factor between driving or not driving.

Why?
I don't see any need for an upgraded torque converter if you're at stock power levels, besides the fact for launching? An oil cooler makes sense and i was planning on one until my engine seals started to go. I can understand that mod.

Are you going to be swapping out cogs of the FR-S into your BRZ to get the optimum ratios?
