I'm no engineer...well not automotive, anyway. I think Humf nailed it! You obviously did not share this with Subaru or they would have likely congratulated you on creating a do it yourself detonating engine!

To be honest I completely forgot about the puddle until just now. I figured any water in the engine would cause it to seize up immediately if it didn't break the engine entirely.

I don't think it hydolocked (water in the cylinder(s)).

I'm guessing that cold water against a hot block may have set itself up for cracking.

I agree. It is incredible how hot the engine blocks get on these things. I have a 2ZZ-GE in my Spyder and it gets nowhere near as hot as the F20A in my son's FR-S. And my engine is in the back and gets very little airflow over it.

I can see that big block of aluminum getting immersed in cold water and developing a crack.
