Forgetting to put E-Brake down
I have a really bad habit of forgetting to put my e brake down from time to time and attempting to take off in first gear. My car doesn't move at all when this happens and I quickly realize what I have done. My question is can this cause any damage from putting too much stress on the drivetrain, engine mounts or any other parts of the car? I am considering putting a note on my car to remind me to put my e brake down so I stop doing this.

If you have a manual gearbox, you risk wearing out your clutch prematurely.
If auto, see reply above. In any case: Make a habit of always checking the parking brake is completely off before shifting into gear. Problem solved. Next? |

That really is a bad habit lol.
Yes, of course doing that will cause damage to your car. Maybe not after one time, or even twice, but over time it most certainly will. How did you get this habit anyways... it's completely intuitive to release the brakes before going. I mean I would understand if you had the habit of just never using the e-brake (my mom does this, just puts her automatic car in P and leaves), but it seems you're consciously pulling it up and then not pulling it down. If it's really giving you trouble, a better, but not optimal, alternative is to just shift into a gear when your car is parked after you shut off your engine; this will prevent it from rolling away. |

how? The parking brake is literally between you and the shifter. Should be really hard to miss.

Damage? Dafunk you guys are smoking.
The only "damage" is just quickly wearing out the brake shoes. It's a bad habit, just like driving while masterbating. So stop doing it.

................just don't do it anymore.
Your car is OK, the engine on your car will kill itself, before any significant damage will be done. Unless you have a yellow corvette .......... [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdw4jiieWjI"]Watch Corvette Burnout Fail Destroys Clutch - YouTube[/ame] humfrz |

Even wearing out the shoes is remote since he discovers it is on immediately. Now drive around with it only part way on while wondering what the weird smell is and why your car seems to be hesitating...

Come on, guys. It's an honest question. Everybody's shit stinks.
No worries, OP. The worst that you could do is actually drive off with it partially engaged. Maybe e-brake shoes and the discs in that case. edit: yeah, like what @Tcoat was describing.

Since I often get to drive cars other people own and/or have parked, I go through my quick checklist every time I start a car. Any car. Even my car and even if I know I parked it.
1. Start engine. 2. Parking brake off. 3. Brake pedal feels firm and normal. 4. Check fuel level and scan dash for warning lights. 5. DRL's/headlights in correct setting, rear and front fog lights off. This goes so fast I barely notice I'm doing it. |
