I was on the way to Supercar Saturday with my son on Saturday ... saw the plume of smoke go up and came across this.

Miraculously, no one was killed.

I grabbed my extinguisher and ran over ... cops arrived at the same time and ordered me back. Not that it would have helped ... vehicle was engulfed in flames. But I thought there were people still in there and felt compelled to at least try.

This now makes 5 car fires I have witnessed first hand. Re-emphasises my passion to get a fire extinguisher in every car. My 16 year old son now also shares my passion. As a learner driver about to get his license, it also taught him an important lesson about respecting a car.

I wouldn't have shared this if it were a fatality or anyone was seriously injured.

I love how the base of the light pole is even on fire from the electricals being shorted. Completely unrelated to the fire in the car.

What kind of car was that?

The only car fire I've seen while driving on the highway for over 55 years, was one that started under the jump seat (where the batteries are) of my 1970 MGB-GT. Yep, I yanked the cables off and it went out.

Of course, since Lucas electrical was involved, ...... that doesn't count .....

I've seen at least 3 car fires (maybe 4) over my lifetime and they always tend to look like hell. Not sure if a car fire extinguisher could've prevented or helped this accident as it looked so severe, but having one around couldn't hurt.

Every car fire I have ever seen (about 5-7) has been so big that I think it's unlikely that a an extinguisher small enough to be kept in the interior of a car would have accomplished anything. They typically start at the carb / fuel rail, and burn so strongly that even acting fast would not get the fire out. Best to call 911, extract belongings, and GTFO.

Suprsingly Ive seen a couple fires (Oh Los Angeles). I remember most of the fires Ive seen being on the 405 freeway The most recent one was also on the 405 a couples months back a vehicle on the other side of the freeway on fire, its a scary thought because it can happen to anyone. I think a fire extinguisher is a great idea to have in the car. Its a good way to prevent a entire car getting covered in flames. We should all carry one, Ive seen brand new Jeeps catch on fire so no one is safe really.

A small extinguisher can help with some small fires, like the ones produced by an oil cooler line failure (oil itself is not flammable but its vapors are).

Even better than buying a hand held extinguisher or a bracket inside the car to hold an extinguisher when the car is actually

not sure any extinguisher would have saved that car. I have a feeling insane high speed or something even crazier was to blame.

Yeah that fire was just the cherry on top. You can't even recognize it as a car looking at it now.

That's nut. Almost a year ago at this point, I was involved in a car accident on a major highway and during impact, my fuel lines snapped and sparked a fire. The front end of the car burst into flames with me being in the car, my door being pinned under the truck I hit. Dazed after the accident, and I had to crawl out the passenger seat with the car on fire.

The fire was maintained by a semi truck driver on the OTHER side of the highway pulled over and ran across traffic with a small fire extinguisher, where he maintained the fire until the Fire Department came.

Shut down traffic for 3 hours on a Tuesday morning commute on a large highway in PA.

No major injuries. / RIP First Car. '94 Camaro.
