is a black car much hotter?

Does a car with black paint make the interior much hotter than white in summer? has anyone owned both colors before?

I'm in CA.

As long as you don't paint the inside you should be fine...but keep in mind these cars already have a black interior. It was 99F today and I must say that was the first time I didn't have a smile on my face while getting in the BRZ..

All of my cars have been black and I must say that it does get hotter on the inside. Tints help a little bit, but for some reason I feel that black cars retain heat more than other car colors. Especially with a black interior

Black gets really hot compared to most other colors. Had a black car for the past 8 years and will not buy another one unless it's an awesome deal for the car. Hot lava has faired much better so far.

I can tell you, I have the black FR-S. The car is uber hot. Especially today, here in Montreal it was 40 with the humidity. I wish I had gloves so I could touch the steering wheel.

Not car related but:

I crashed my 08 R6 at a trackday a couple of years ago (it had race glass, crash protection/cases etc on so all good) but busted up my tank.

before:

As you can see it had a white tank originally. To replace the tank after the crash from a local dealer was around $900 so i bought one off ebay from the US for $200, unfortunately the US never got my paint scheme so I had to make do with a black tank instead.

Getting to the point - summers in Perth can hit 40 degrees celsius (104 farenheit). Riding my bike with a white tank was hot but bearable, after swapping to a black tank it gets so hot it burns my inner thighs through kevlar lined jeans.

You can be damn sure my next bike will be white or another light colour.

I will get an 86 in sonic blue/ultramarine though.

In general yes. I remember when I lived in Hawaii, white was the most popular color due to the heat. But it shouldn't be a big factor in the relatively cool SF Bay Area, unless you live inland where the summer reach the 100's

Yeah same here. It was 90 degrees or so today - the car was extremely hot. I'm hoping that once I get tints it will cool down somewhat.

I had a discussion a couple weeks ago about this. We wanted to know exactly what temperature difference is found between black and white.

2 identical cars parked in the same area, 1 white, 1 black. Using different cars would skew the test results.

I want to know to what actual degree the difference is.
