Toyota's WRC comeback in 2012!!!

According to a Japanese publication, Toyota's long rumoured WRC comeback will happen in 2012. The car to compete in WRC will be the new Vitz (aka Yaris) powered by a 1.6 L turbocharged engine. Hmm, any help from Subaru there? In any case, welcome back Toyota... it was about time!

If they actually do hopefully the will re-enter F1 also in 2012/2013 when the go to using smaller turbocharged motors.

Cuz when Impreza came out w H4 Turbo AWD, Impreza pretty much dominated the WRC... also no offense, but Celica engine layout had a horrible cooling setup.

iirc current Vitz can have 4WD, so they can go for FWD or 4WD.

I really hope this is true. I want a World Championship in something for Toyota so I can feel good for them again. Too many withdrawals when there was potential.

WRC is their only big time championship.

Hell, I might even be tempted by a turbo 1.6L AWD Yaris...

Wow its that time of the year again hearing toyota come back wrc they do this every year blogs and magazines. I dont know my guess is unless toyota introduce a new global production car 4 cylinder turbo w/ awd thats the time they will be back in wrc.

Erm.. you mean while Toyota was banned in 1995? Then came back in 1998 and walked away with the WRC championship within a year, and then retired winners?



Care to elaborate on the deficiency of the Celica's cooling setup? Top mount? Just like the Impreza's?

Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeing Toyota come back to the WRC. Citroen and Loeb are racking up way too many championship wins.

True, Toyota was banned in '95, but iirc they could of come back '96. Also they didn't walked away with the WRC, it was more like they had to walk away. Cuz next yr Toyota stop making 4WD Celica & they couldn't keep making the "super" Corolla just for WRC... so in the end, they had to walk away.

If you count how many Championship manufacture, Impreza has more than Celica (Imp-3 Cel-2). If you wanna count Corolla then it's a tie, but count both driver and manufacture then Subaru has higher numbers.

That's my argument... but you know Rally stuff more than I do, so next reply from you will prob beat me on this debate. But for mechanical stuff, I might have chance of keeping it up w ya (cuz I am Boxer Engine Lover )

Both pics aren't great pics (sorry), but you can see that Celica's TMIC is on top of the engine. While Impreza is behind the engine, that makes it not getting direct heat from the engine.

Good point Ichi. The Celica's IC is right beside the turbo and manifold, whereas on the Impreza the turbo is further away and the exhaust manifold is mostly underneath the motor.

Subaru Impreza 3 Manufacturers championships + 3 drivers championships.
Toyota Celica 2 manufacturers championships + 4 drivers championships.

Corolla has one more Manufacturer championship. Toyota could have come back sooner, but it was their choice not to. They only came back to prove a point. If they chose to continue, and they could have, Subaru would probably never had enjoyed the success they had (Especially since Tommi Makkinen owned the WRC Drivers championsip while Toyota was away, and indeed snagged it from Didier Auriol and El Matador (Carlos Sainz) in 1999. They stopped making the GT4 Celica because they didn't rally anymore, not the other way around. Had they stuck in the WRC and not went to LeMans/F1, we probably would have had a GT4 version of the ZZT celica .

Anyway, good point on the Intercooler placement, but one important thing, the Celica's intercooler is an Air-water unit, not and air-air unit like the impreza. Of note however, and admittedly I just found this info, I did not know this;

The biggest drawback of the Impreza boxer engine is the proximity of the inlet manifold to most heat sources in the engine bay. Additionally the intercooler is located above the engine, which is definitely not the best place to put it, hence the big central air vent on the bonnet. A similar choice, for the intercooler placement, in the Nissan Sunny GTi-R of old resulted in engineers calling it inter-warmer...Locating the intercooler this way results in relatively high intake air temperatures of around 50 °C and thus reduces the engine's efficiency. The racing version of the Impreza uses an intercooler which is relocated in the front bumper.
