Tires... AutoX and Track - time attack

Ok.. current setup is 245/40/17 RS3 v2 on 17x9 +35 with alignment limited by stock hardware including camber bolts and eibach proline springs.

To maintain my classing for AutoX (STX) I am limited to 200tw so current setup works great. Tire width I can go to 265

Now for Time Attack I can go to 140tw... width doesn't matter

If you had to choose one set of tires, to serve for AutoX and Time Attack... so basically 200tw which would you choose? If you could choose a Toyo or Yoko at 140tw if rules permitted for AutoX would it serve? and which?

Oops one other question... 245 vs 255?

I can't keep a different set of rims and tires for each series.. on top of the 'dd' set. Need to conserve some space... and $

Regional time attack is 5 laps, including warmup/3 hot/cooldown during timed runs.

Think I am fairly competitive in my class in AutoX locally, 2 events so far this year in the BRZ, Pax and 1st in STX, and 1st in STX.

Or do I just need to shell out for a bigger garage

I'd be somewhat surprised if the Toyo or Yoko (actually 180tw) were on the same playing field these days with the RE71R and Rival-S.

That said, there are definitely people who did well last year on either of them, in CS, at least.

What gives you that impression? They're sticky street tires that grip well.

Rivals were never competitive, but the RE71R is the king right now.

Wear will be in line with other tires of similar grip.

hmm never seen that one RE-11A was the king in street category but obviously this new tire looks like a game changer, that tread pattern kinda reminds me the R888s ..

The Rival S is plenty competitive. Have you read GRM lately? The results may surprise you...

I prefer actual results over magazine results, regardless of who the magazine is supported by. Ultimately, Magazines need to keep advertisers happy.

Look at reviews for the original Rival, and then look at actual results.

I imagine that the RE71R will be fine for time attack, but could get greasy if you're pushing hard for a 15-20 minute session.

Tell that to all the people on Bridgestones getting beat by Rival S shod cars. That guy walking off with the 1st place trophy is just a marketing gimmick.

Do not be too quick to overlook the Rival S. A Rival S shod MR2 Spyder took down the RE71r equipped s2000s and won the STR class at the recent Pro Solo at Wilmington. The Bridgestones hit the ground first and were very fast. They became the must have tire quickly. The Rival S was a little later coming but are starting to show in the results.

The tires are both fast but have different characteristics that may suit one driving style better than others.

That blows classing way out of the water.

For OTA it's 1 class for non premium R comps (R888, etc) or 2 classes for premium R comps (Kumho V710, etc).

Not 100% for autox, but I think either puts you into a prepared or modified class.
