Sound Generator Delete and Perrin Inlet Tube, Opinions?
I did the sound generator delete by installing the Perrin Inlet Tube.
For those that have done the sound generator delete, what was your opinion of your driving experience after doing this mod? I wanted to try it out to experiment what the engine bay would look like cleaned up a bit, remove negligible weight, receive the debated gain of '+1 hp' I've read/heard about, and listened to what the car sounded like without the sound generator. After doing the mod, the engine bay does look a little bit better in my opinion. During my morning commute, I actually found my drive rather pleasant and calming, but I missed the noise. I felt like I was driving a somewhat more luxurious car. The sound generator definitely made my commute more fun and lively. Also, last night, when I was driving spiritedly, I missed the sound the generator made. The car driving experience now feels a little more sedated. I'm almost sure I'll put it back in, or order the OFH + OFT combo sooner to compensate for this lack of auditory feedback and fun. I also may switch to the SuperTek tube in the future, if I continue this no sound generator route, I didn't know about that option at the time I ordered the Perrin, and after checking it out, I like the look better. For those that did the delete, did you regret it and go back to the sound generator? Or do you still have the delete and miss the sound generator sometimes? Or did you simply liven up your car more by adding items that added noise + performance, i.e. header, exhaust, etc...? Last edited by loading_please_wait; 04-23-2015 at 09:45 AM. |

I usually play music while driving, so never missed removing the sound generator.
Next "sound-affecting" upgrade I did was a perrin 2.5 catback w/ resonator, and I do miss the stock muffler after that upgrade. |

Thanks! Crustol, I guess the Perrin is a little too loud for your tastes? I've read that was one of the quieter catbacks.
Further question for everyone... For the plastic clip shown here... https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8z...ew?usp=sharing Have you or anyone else done anything with it? Have you removed it? Kept it there? That little thing was hard to undo. It's basically like a zip tie. Was it hard to undo for you? I wound up just pulling the sound generator really hard after trying to loosening the clip by hand to no avail. After a strong tug, the clip undid itself. I originally thought I broke the clip, but I didn't. I then reinserted the end of the loop back in and it clicked into place. I tried to undo it again, no luck. I've been meaning to delete the sound generator, mostly because it's pointless. I've removed the material from inside and then later plugged it up completely and it doesn't seem to add much to the experience for me either way. The best modification for sound has been my cat back and UEL headers.

All you "old" members need to be more informative than just "use the search button".
Not saying you don't have a valid point but seriously if you know the answer or some helpful info why don't you spend the tiny extra time/effort to share that info instead? Or just not spend any effort and don't comment at all.

i did the sound tube delete to try and rid the car of the weird induction note it makes stock. Also, it cleans up the engine bay nicely.
I think most owners on the enthusiast side of the fence have removed theirs, it's pretty pointless if you do any other engine/exhaust modding.

I did the Perrin inlet hose after I did a K&N drop-in filter. It sounded a little quieter but I didn't notice a big difference. Since then I put on a Magnaflow CBE and the car sounds amazing.
Note on the Perrin hose: I was trying to pull the sound hose off at the little elbow as per the instructions. I got a little carried away yanking on it, and the whole thing came out all the way to the firewall. I got a 3/4" plug at Lowe's and plugged the hole in the firewall from inside the cabin. I have no idea how I will get the hose back in if I decide I want a sound generator again. The hole is buried way down in there. |

Update, i'm noticing that that the belt is rubbing against the Perrin Tube. I saw one other posting where this has happened, http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...upertek+review. Has anyone else had their belt rubbed against their inlet tube?

The sound isn't as 'fake' to me, which is what I sometimes thought when I was driving around town. I also picked up the Pex 3/4'' cap from Home Improvement to plug the hole in the engine side of the firewall. Perfect fit! I removed mine. Personally i enjoy it more with it removed. It's more more quiet in the cabin and the car sounds more smoother and appealing to it's hp #'s
I found with the sound tube, it sounded cool, especially when i first test drove it, but after time it's just so loud and when you floor it it sounds like your going 500km/h when your only going 80km/h haha. Also highway was loud and annoying. So i like it removed, i can hear music better, talk in the car and the ngine sounds better to me.

Removed the sound tube, don't miss it at all.
Bonus for me was that it's a great place to run a new amplifier power wire (8 gauge)through the firewall without having to drill a hole or poke through a different gasket somewhere. I know it's sealed well too since it's still using the OEM sound tube gasket:

That's what I did, and even if I really push on the tube, it doesn't get within .25" of the belt. Not as good as the .50" clearance Perrin says you should have, but that amount is not possible due to the shape of the tube which makes it curve towards the belt. |
