Is this a reliable brand for short shifter ?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SUBARU-BR...-/291333426555

I'm tempted to buy the newline short shifter. It reduces shift throws by 35-45% and it's a lot cheaper but I can't find any reviews or thread about it.

or should I get the TRD / kart boys one ?

You pretty much summed it up yourself!

FWIW I bought a cheap eBay short shifter for just about every other car I've owned and never really had an issue.

Yeah some other guy bought one on here. Had a ton of issues, but did claim they were due to install issues and not the actual product. I'll see if I can link the thread.

I would say the TRD since it is specifically made for the car that keeps the factory warranty intact. If you are out of warranty you can try it but I am going TRD for most of my add on's because of TRD reliability and performance, the little it would be, in check. But that's my opinion. I just don't wan't my transmission to have an issue and Toyota say it was because of the 3rd party shifter I installed. Basically I'm playing it safe for a while.

Just a heads up that by installing TRD parts yourself the dealer may still void warranty by saying you screwed up on the install (even if you didn't). The only way they are most likely to cover the parts or associated issues under warranty is if you have them installed by the dealer. Even then there is a chance they will fight it just because some dealers seem to be that way.

This. They have to be installed at the dealer to be covered.

I pulled the below straight from the TRD brochure-

TRD PERFORMANCE PARTS INSTALLED BY A DEALER:
TRD Performance Parts are warranted for 12 months or 12,000 miles
from the date of installation or for the balance of the new car warranty
in force on the date of installation, whichever is greater, when TRD
Performance Parts are installed by an authorized Toyota or Scion
Dealer. Superchargers carry the same warranty, but the coverage is 12
months or 12,000 miles from the date of installation or the balance of
the new car 5 year, 60,000 mile powertrain warranty in force at the time
of installation. This warranty does not cover maintenance services such
as replacement of brake pads/linings and clutch linings. This warranty
does not cover noise, vibration, cosmetic conditions and other deterioration
caused by normal wear and tear. TRD customers are responsible
for ensuring that the use of any TRD Performance Part complies with all
applicable federal, state or local laws, regulations and ordinances.

TRD PERFORMANCE PARTS NOT INSTALLED BY A DEALER:
TRD Performance Parts installed by anyone other than an authorized
Toyota or Scion dealer are warranted for 12 months or 12,000 miles
from the date of purchase only and the warranty coverage is limited to
the replacement value of the TRD Performance Part. Superchargers
carry the same coverage. This warranty does not cover maintenance
services such as replacement of brake pads/linings and clutch linings.
This warranty does not cover noise, vibration, cosmetic conditions
and other deterioration caused by normal wear and tear. Part failure
caused by improper installation by anyone other than an authorized
Toyota or Scion dealer may void the TRD Performance Part warranty,
the new vehicle warranty or both. TRD customers are responsible for
ensuring that the use of any TRD Performance Part complies with all
applicable federal, state or local laws, regulations and ordinances.

this being the difference : Part failure
caused by improper installation by anyone other than an authorized
Toyota or Scion dealer may void the TRD Performance Part warranty,

Exactly! And we all know there are plenty of dealers that would take full advantage of that clause.

Good find. I am going with the with the this sentence, using MAY is helpful to the consumer of TRD parts. If it were a third party part I say no go but a TRD part sold at a retail price for consumers to buy and installed by the consumer, myself a person well versed in Automotive Mechanic's, with supplied directions would be an interesting scenario if something happened. Do any TRD parts say on the box or in directions "to be installed only by a toyota or scion authorized installer." I'm sure some do but maybe not all.
