Ontario owners

wondering who you guys are with and if your insurer is ok with mods?

I spoke with Bel-Air today about the mods I have. They said it's fine (I don't have power adders, that may be a different story) as long as the total value is under 5000 and I take pictures of the mods and engine bay and send them to them.

I have Western Assurance and they have no issue with mods as long as I let them know when I do it.

Actually it went down! Not by a lot but the FRS has a better rating than Lancer GTs. If I do expensive mods and want them covered it would go up but it would be by very little. It would not go up in risk category though as it is still a FRS on their books no matter what I did too it. As long as the car's overall rating doesn't climb too high all is good.

Just wondering why you would call after you insured your car initially to then list out mods

Are they going to replace them if you make a claim?

That's the idea.
Also since your car is modified they could refuse to cover you in the case of an accident.

This is the bigger concern. It's a grey area if they didn't ask you about modifications, but if they ask if the car is modified and you say no they can, and most likely will, drop your policy for non-disclosure after you've been in an accident and the adjuster saw the car. That means that you have zero coverage for the accident, on both the car and liability. If the other driver sues you, you're screwed.

That's why I spoke with them. When I initially bought the car and they asked about mods, I told them no, at this point the car is not modified. But, down the road it probably will be. I didn't want to be SOL in the case of an accident.

Hmm interesting. I'm hoping to install my RCE yellows this weekend. Other than that I only have rims and a cat-back for any thing major. I should give them a shout.

They really just want to know if you are going to try to claim the mod value if something happens. If you are willing to just write the value off if the car is totaled they really didn't seem to care what I did. We checked pretty close before I signed the deal as I thought for sure the insurance rate would sky rocket with what the car is but was pleasantly surprised (and had a happy wife).

Depends on the company. Some will refuse to insure a car with anything aftermarket in the suspension because of all the shitty mods that people did when modding cars started being the cool thing to do.

I think most have calmed down now, especially if you're not young and driving a beat up car with mods.
