Stock Suspension Lifespan? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Just curious what the consensus is on this? What's the average lifespan of the stock suspension on the 86? I'm at just over 23k miles on mine now. Everything still feels pretty good, but keep wondering how much longer I have? My next mod will definitely be a a suspension upgrade.

There is no average. These cars are pretty new and not many people have put enough miles to find out when they go out. There is wearing out and there is blowing out. Most cars never get replacements for worn shocks, and only usually when they are blown.

I'm at 64k miles and 40k of that is lowered. I've done some bushing but on stock shocks and they feel fine still

Typically around 50k miles (80k km's) is what shock manufacturers suggest as the replacement interval. I'm at ~96k km's, the last ~40k km's lowered, with no issues at all.

Hard to say. Depends how you drive and where you drive really. Parts will wear out quicker, specifically shocks and bushings/ball joints on very uneven & rough roads. I am in New England and our roads are mostly shit. I wouldn't be surprised to do a full bushing replacement at 100k mi. I'm at 36k now and don't have any signs or symptoms of failures. Car drives great, but I do emphasize on trying to avoid potholes and extra shitty roads.

heh, I'm only at 40k and I think it's time to swap em out :p

Yours have probably been worked just as hard, or harder, than mine. I have A LOT of smooth clean 401 and 407 km's on them, I bet that 2km's of city streets works them harder than 50km's of clean highway.

The roads where I live generally aren't too terrible. After some recent ice storms a lot of new potholes have popped up which I've been dodging like crazy. I'm hoping to get at least 50k miles out of the stock struts. It looks like I'll be putting some RCE Yellows on them very soon.

Damn I must head in the wrong direction to find this "smooth clean 401"!
We have some holes up this way that I am pretty sure have trucks in the bottom of them.

3 years or 36k miles is the "limit", in reality you can get more.

But as the saying goes... YMMV.

I've driven some cars that have stock shocks and are past the 100k mile mark. It depends on the quality of the shock, where it's driven and how many miles are on the car.
I have over 50k on the stock shocks and we have some really shitty roads in New York, even worse in the winter. I'm really impressed on how they held up, since 50k tends to be the magical number around here for passenger cars.

But as most here, if stock struts are starting to misbehave...time for an upgrade.

If the winter is really harsh near you, swapping out aftermarket suspension for OEM seems like a good idea if you have the time and experience.

When used on bumpy/dirt roads shocks on any car wont last long , but springs tend to sag after about 300 000 kms so no need to fit lowering springs.
