Exclamation Error occurred while reading data from DME

Hey all. I just bought a OFT from one of the members on the forums and I went to try and use it and I got an error

Now, here is what I did. I got in the car, foot off the clutch, pressed the start button 2 times to get the car to KOEO. I then plugged in the OBD cable, and the connected the OFT.

All is fine so far, it turned on, everything was good, I was happy.

I clicked Tuning, chose Toyota> GT86> FA20> and then Read.

Here is where things are weird. It started to read and I got the error "An error occured while reading data from DME. Please try again."

I got unplugged it, turned the car off, plugged it in again, KOEO, went through the steps again, same error. I have tried the car in ACC, same error message. Everything I have tried led to the same error message. I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Did you buy your car new or used? If used, it's very likely you have a reflashed ECU with read protection.

No, I bought it new. I managed to get it working. I guess it was too cold to flash it.

make sure key is in full on position not just accessory, but motor not running

cold or hot does not matter for flashing

@steve99 - It worked after I started the car for 20 minutes. Got it up to operating temperature, and turned it off. I don't have a physical key, so I got in, pressed the start button 2 times, and it went to KOEO (Key On, Engine Off), and it worked once the car was nice and warmed up :P

Now, to figure out how to set Rev Limiter and FFS. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right :/

I downloaded Rom Raider, got the Rom Raider files, and the tune files, flashed the car. In Rom Raider, I went to ECU Definition Manager, chose the Rom Raider XML file (B00C), opened the B00C image, and got a checksum error 1, and checksum error 2. But, there was no Rev Limiter, or FFS.

Temperature definitely doesn't matter when it comes to ECU communication/flashing. Just as long as the ignition is fully ON and there is sufficient battery voltage, the ECU will communicate like it should. Ignore checksum errors when opening OFT maps up in Romraider. The OFT corrects them automatically when tune files are uploaded via OF Manager.

Launch Control and Flat-foot shift is supported with B00C files. Just make sure you are using the most current XML file.

Shiv@- Thank you! It must have been the battery in that case then. It did have an extended crank to start. It's been sitting in the cold (-20C to -30C) for a couple of days, so that must have been it. Oops :P

Also, I was using the wrong XML.

Thanks again!

Do not try to flash cars with any tuning system if the battery is weak or discharged it a quick way to a failed flash or bricked ecu. All flash systems rely on correct and stable battery volts for the flash to be sucessfull. The SH 72531 micro computer in the ecu need stable volts to write to its flash memory.

Toyota get their techs to connect a battery charger to cars when they flash ecu,s. It might be a bit of overkill but ensure your battery is good and dont mess with electrical stuff in your car like lights radio or open close doors when your flashing, you might get away with it 99% of the time but not worth the risk.

Hi guys,

I just purchased a OFT and am having issues reading the ECU. I have followed the instructions step by step (ACC ON, Engine OFF) > Tune > Read

I continually get "An error occured while reading data from DME. Please try again"

As this was a second hand car, I have contacted the previous owner to get a bit more information on the car/ecu.

Turns out the car previously had a tune on it, namely, the BRZedit. I contacted the Tuning house who has confirmed that there is NO Read Protect on the ECU. The could not provide any further information on it unfortunately.

Would anyone be able to assist with this issue? Is there anyway to read the ECU at all? I am really keen on using the OFT

Make sure ignition is full on not just accessory ie two pushes of start button without pushing clutch or key full on in key ignition

See if the oft can log data via the real time display if it can log data or read ecu info in doagnostics this will check the data connection to ecu

Brz edit tunes are generally result un the ECU being READ locked, this is to stop people copying the tuners tune\rom. You can WRITE over the tune with another device like tactrix.
Unfortunatly the oft wants to read the current rom first, the tune place should be able to write back a stock rom for you.

If your near in Brisbane and you can get to me i should be able to write a stock tune to the ecu for you unless it ecutek tune

@steve99

Thanks for the advice, I've tried almost every combination you could think of, the OFT does read live diagnostics which is AWESOME!

I will be making an appointment with Garage88 who did the tune, hopefully they can put the stock tune back on so I can muck around with the OFT.

I would love to take you up on the offer with putting stock rom back on, but unfortunately I am located in Sydney!
