fake vents? . . .

What is the obsession with vents? I had this realization today when i parked next to a honda with stick on vents. And i realized our cars are no different. Just because it is oem doesnt change it.

So what is it? Why do people and manufacturers do it?

Discuss

Not exactly a new thing really.
Just breaks up the plain sides of the car a bit I guess.

I'm not a fan of it either. It was not on the concept design, so someone along the way production decided that was a good idea. At least on the Toyota version, it has the opposing pistons 86 emblem, except for the RS 1.0, which has a similar fake vent like the BRZ.

People think it looks cool and because they see every other car with vents, so why the hell not, although I would never do it.

Just like the Brake Caliper Covers for your Brakes.

There is a lot on/not on the concept design we did/didn't get!

I would like functional fender vents to lose the pressure in the wheel well. Is there a hole under the fake vent piece?

Found these earlier today, probably not the only ones around but they exist at least:

You could also dremel out the area behind the fake vent and use these super-overpriced prova vents as well...

It's a love hate for me. I really need to do something about them myself but, just feel too unmotivated maybe come spring...

The worst part is I want to add more fake vents (but, make them functional) on the rear of the car. The only problem is the rear vents I want cost a fotune, then have to be modified for function and then have to be given a function which is near impossible due to there location. I guess they could be used for brake cooling provided I was in reverse going fast enough :P

Garage Vary LFA style...

Oh, so the engine bay is behind them, not the wheel well. That's good too. These cars can use anything possible to shed heat. I'll have to check those Prova units out. I wonder if they come prepainted in factory colors?

Speed holes!
I think Buick was the first with real vents. But I don't recall if they really did anything. Now it's just a nod to the old classics.

I think Tcoat nailed it... As cars get taller and frumpy due to pedestrian crash regulations, I guess that's one way to hide all the fender real estate

They were one of the first to put fake ones on yes.
The fad started way back in the 20s when some of the top line cars (i.e. Packards) had functioning vents in the hood and fenders. Some of the early race cars even had the exhaust come out through the hood! Imagine 50hp of roaring thunder right in your face!

I vented my wastegate through the hood of my beater GTS-T once. The decel load up fireballs were fun. I think I have barely latent redneck tendencies.
